South Africa is set for a boom in the use of LED lighting following the announcement of Africa's largest energy-saving lighting deal – a joint initiative between local power utility Eskom and global electronics giant Philips.

Speaking at the launch event in Johannesburg, Philips executive VP Ronald de Jong said that it was the company's policy to focus on new trends in society, especially in terms of coping with population growth and promoting good health.

"We started off, 120 years ago, as a lightning company," said De Jong, "and today lighting is still an important part of our business. We want to make a significant contribution to saving energy needed for lighting."

De Jong announced that Philips, with the help of Eskom, would be distributing 200 000 lamps from its MasterLED range to commercial consumers such as banks, casinos,We can produce led light,goodledbulbsss,led lamp according to your requirements. hotels and retail outlets, at a discounted price.

The announced deal coincided with the COP17 climate change conference, currently underway in Durban. Eskom was involved in preparations for the conference, notably in the upgrading of street lights around the venue from halogen to LED.

"Each lamp uses 40W to 43W less power, so for companies with a lot of lighting, the cost reduction can be substantial," said De Jong. "The 200 000 lamps could potentially save as much as R41-million (US$5.1-million) per year, and prevent the emission of up to 50 000 tons of carbon dioxide.Gineico is an exclusive agent for many leading Italian brands including interior lighting, lamp shades, brightshine and led downlights,"

He added that individually, each lamp could cut R200 ($25) per year from electricity bills straight away. An extra bonus is that the brighter, cleaner atmosphere leads to a better work environment.

Karebo director Ravi Govender said that his company has worked with Eskom on previous roll-outs, such as the successful compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) programme. With our electricity supply often under strain, we want to encourage all electricity consumers to reduce their usage where possible."

Etzinger said that the parastatal's CFL programme, which encouraged consumers to replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, and to date has distributed 47-million of the energy-saving devices, has been a success.

"We've helped commercial and residential properties lower their electricity bills, and when we've returned, even years later, we've found that many people haven't gone back to the old, cheaper light bulbs but are still using the CFLs."

Although Eskom is building new power stations, Etzinger said that those are long-term solutions and that people can begin to save electricity immediately if they switch to more efficient technology. Cyclists don't want to obey stop signs

City Hall's cycling subcommittee thinks it's high time the province permitted cyclists to treat stop signs like yield signs.

In other words, they think cyclists should be legally allowed to pedal through stop signs without always coming to a complete stop.

But, to the cycling world, it's apparently known as an "Idaho stop."

The name originates with a law passed by the Idaho state legislature in 1982 that allows bicyclists to wheel through stop signs without coming to a full halt unless there are other vehicles at the intersection, in which case they're supposed to yield the right of way.

That's one of the changes the subcommittee wants to see the Ontario Ministry of Transportation adapt in order clarify the responsibilities of all road users and to encourage more people to cycle.

But, this Monday, councillors on the city's public works committee applied the brakes to the idea, preventing the recommendation from being included in a list of suggestions to the ministry such as more lighting requirements for cyclists.

But let's forget about all that for a moment, and talk about the actual tour itself. There's certainly been no shortage of folks, particularly within the U2 camp, willing to pat themselves on the back for the grandiosity of the whole spectacle. And to be clear, it is a spectacle. The towering, ostentatious structure -- which, you can probably see from space, and which takes nearly as long to erect as it took God to speak us into existence -- is truly something to behold, the revolving bridges, the giant LEDs, the dazzling illumination.

But is it truly magnificent, or have we simply become so accustomed to not being dazzled in this new century that all you need to win us over is a few megatons of steel and some flashing lights? Are we are so easily awed that we're oblivious to the fact that what we have here is really a lot of sizzle and not a lot of steak?

As I looked around at the awestruck expressions plastered to the faces of those around me as the band lowered its LED screens, cloaking itself with a mesh of screens that resembled a giant bug zapper during "Zooropa" and the fittingly titled "City of Blinding Lights," I couldn't help but be reminded of that scene from A Bug's Life, in which one winged creature pleads with another: "No! Hurry! No! Don't look at the light!" Inexplicably drawn to the glowing display, his counterpart responds intoxicatingly: "I can't help it. It's so beautiful." That, as you might recall, is immediately followed by the unmistakable sound of his demise, BZZZT!

I will give them this, though: there really wasn't a bad seat in the house. As advertised,In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. legalizing red light cameras at traffic intersections, a new crops of
legislators wants to slam on the brakes.

The House Appropriations
Committee Wednesday voted 12-9 to repeal the law passed a year ago that has led
municipalities across the state to install red lights at traffic intersections.


Rep. Richard Corcoran, R-Trinity, the House sponsor of the bill, said
that there have been numerous problems with the cameras and many counties are
throwing out traffic cases spurred by red light camera photos.

“Let’s
step back and figure out a way where we can make these intersections safer for
our communities,” he said.

Law enforcement has lined up against the bill
though, saying the cameras are cutting down on serious accidents in their
communities. Many lawmakers, citing concerns from their local sheriffs, said
they could not vote for the repeal, particularly since it had not been in effect
for even a year.

“I don’t want the blood on my hands that might be
caused by repealing it,” said state Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg.Light

experiment was one of over 100 science projects on display at Lakehead
University’s C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse gym on Tuesday. The Northwestern Ontario
Regional Science Fair had students from grades 4 to 12 from across the region
showcasing a diverse range of experiments.
“My goal in this was to examine
how many fruits it would take to light the bulb, and my question was what fruit
would take the least,” explained Davey, who pitted lemons, oranges and
grapefruits against each other in a battle of citrus supremacy.
