Al, a Centerville native, spent 20 years in the Navy before sustaining a combat-related injury that forced him into early retirement. Shortly after, Christy became disabled in a car accident and could no longer work either
"I had a really bad fall and went through 53 surgeries," Kroell said. "When I retired, my wife also got badly injured in a near-fatal car accident and became disabled as well."
The Kroells had no choice but to move out of their home on base near San Diego. They packed up and moved to Squaw Valley – close enough to Al's hometown, but far enough from city living that they could focus on rest and recuperation.
As the credit card bills stacked up, Christy and Al found solace in something that brought them joy: making custom laser engraved plaques for military service members. Al said he started making plaques over 30 years ago when he was in the military as a way to honor service men and women departing military bases. He used an engraving machine to produce custom plaques from wood, metal and glass.
It didn't occur to the Kroells that they could make a living doing it, until they caught wind of Reedley College's entrepreneurship program two years ago. They each took a few business classes, and Al joined the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Club. He was inspired.

He learned to operate heavy machinery in manufacturing class, design computer graphics in art class, and master public speaking in communication class. "They don't teach you that in the military," Al Kroell said. "Everything that we've done here at the college has helped us to get this business off the ground. It's all been trial and error and a lot of hard work, but I know we wouldn't be where we are today without it."
Where they are today is a pretty good spot. Nine months ago, the Kroells officially started ChristyAl Engraving. They wrote a compelling business plan that nabbed them a $100,000 loan from a small business investing company, and purchased a highly accurate computerized laser engraving machine.

They received a grant from the Sam's Club Giving Program to attend a lecture in Dallas, Texas earlier this spring, where they listened to nationally recognized speakers in the world of small business. JFK considers ways to cut project costs
The architects from Allied Design Consultants, Inc., Springfield meet with the Spring Valley Elementary Board of Education Wednesday night to discus ways it could still get a “dream” building without going too much over budget.
The new building project which will be built behind the existing John F. Kennedy school building was bid out last month. The architects offered a long list of other cuts the board could make to save money, including downgrading LED lighting to fluorescents and going with cheaper materials for flooring, roofing and walls.
The board said some of the changes like with the lighting would cause energy bills to be higher. Superintendent Jim Hermes said it would be like taking long-term losses for a short-term gain.
Board president Ray Nolasco said the state originally gave them the $12 million in funds based on a project that was supposed to be $16 million. He asked if they could go back to the state and ask them to match funding for the new projected cost.
“It’s the worst time to plan anything with the state,” said Hermes. He added, “The goal on this whole project was to save the tax payers money.”
Maras said there are grants available that could help the school pay for projects, including the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation grants and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Energy Efficiency grant.
The architects also offered some suggestions on what the school board should not cut back on, including switching from copper to aluminum for lighting fixtures because of the increased chance of fire. VanDusen also said the school should not go with cheaper bricks for the outside of the new building because it would be there for more than 50 years and aesthetics should play a key role.

'Green' lighting company moves jobs from China
Hundreds of jobs are coming from China to Chattanooga to make all of the city's street lights more energy efficient.
Governor Haslam thanked Global Green Lighting for helping Tennessee in its goal to be the number one state in the Southeast for high quality jobs.
Global Green Lighting is moving jobs to an 1,800 square foot facility in Hixson. Chattanooga will have all new LED street lights before long, and it's now up to local workers to make that happen.
"We went back to China where we were producing all that, shut the factory down, put it in a container, moved it back and here it sits," Global Green Lighting CEO Don Lepard said.
UTC alum Don Lepard started his company in Soddy Daisy in the late nineties doing electrical work for appliances. When the economy tanked in 2009, he came up with a plan to give "green" lighting a new shade, by combining LED lights with wireless radio control technology and a smart grid system.
"That basically allows us to measure the power consumption or the energy saved and report it back to the utility company, and the city only pays for the energy they use," Lepard said.
"It does save in energy and becomes something that all of us are looking for ways to be able to save money in government because it is the tax payers dollars," Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said.
And to bring the estimated $2.7 million a year in savings to the city, Lepard needs workers. He's already hired 40. Lawson family to light McLeod Hospice trees
The annual tree lighting event at McLeod
Hospice is special to a lot of people but none more so than McLeod Hospice
patients and their families. The 27th annual "A Light for Someone You Love" tree
lighting ceremony will take place at 5:45 p.m. Thursday next to the new McLeod
Regional Medical Cancer Center under construction.
Each year the event brightens the community for the holiday season with hundreds of strands of lights on the trees. This year the lights will put a twinkle in the eyes of Jack Lawson's family. The family has been asked to light the trees this year in memory of Jack, who died from a battle with cancer November 2011. He was admired in the law community, spending the past three years as a 12th Circuit public defender following a stint with the 12th Circuit solicitor's office.
Lawson also was given the 2011 Ralph King Anderson Jr. Public Service Award from the Florence Bar Association.
"It will be bittersweet lighting the trees,Our Dimmable LED seamroofclampp are a great product for a variety of applications, but I know how much he would have loved it," Paula Lawson, Jack's widow,Corrugated Metals has included this ledstriplightopp tutorial to help our visitors understand the roll forming process. said. "His one wish was to go home. Without McLeod Hospice, it wouldn't have happened. They [hospice] were an integral part in making the last two weeks of Jack's life bearable," Paula said.
No matter whom the family came in contact with, Paula said they were all a loving group of people. "Not only were they there for Jack, they took care of me, too."
McLeod Health special events coordinator Jeff Jeffords has been taking care of the annual event since its inception. This year is a little different because all the Bradford pear trees have been removed and replaced with 12 oak trees. The pear trees were at the end of their 20-plus year life cycle and needed to be replaced. The are also more than 60,000 LED lights. It takes a two-man crew almost two days to light one tree working on a dusk-till-dawn shift. Jeffords said although he enjoys doing it, it's harder to do than it looks.
"It's enjoyable, except when it gets down to 31 degrees at 3 a.m.. Makes you kind of wonder if you should be home in bed," he said with a laugh.
Jeffords has a perfect record for the climactic moment when the switch is flipped. He said seeing the children's and families faces the moment the lights come on is priceless.
"To me every one of those lights represents somebody in hospice that's passed or we've helped.Find table lamps, t5tube, and more for any room in the house. It's become a symbol and a highlight of Florence," he said.
Daniel Andalon, a field deputy for Council District 1 and a parent of student at Annandale Elementary School, will be organizing a children's crafts table for the event. Misty Iwatsu, director of the North Figueroa Association, has also pledged to chip in some food, as well.
Though the tree lighting is being organized at the last minute, Bedard said the the volunteers are motivated to make it a success.
"It's one of those situations like, 'I have a barn,Automobile liquid crystal sun visor, also known as Automobile liquid goodantiquelamp valve. who wants to put on a show?'" Bedard said. "I think more gets done when people step forward and say, 'I want to do this."

I had been a science fiction fan in my youth but like most people I thought
space operas were only to be realized in the far future. Project Orion changed
my worldview. Since then my made up mind has been unmade several times
concerning most of the “common knowledge” floating around about space flight in
this 21st century. Much of what is generally believed to be true about our space
program is made up of recent hearsay used to hype products that further a
business plan. When I read these infomercials endlessly repeated as fact I get
pretty upset, mostly because exposing these “facts” as false advertising almost
always results in vicious attacks. The private space cult fanatics disgust me
and I will not apologize for my hard feelings about these people. They mislead,
obfuscate, and insult and dogpile anyone who disagrees with their dogma.
It was a slow step by step process but I came to realize the path to the stars is a narrow one. GE Debuts Landmark LED Modules at Light+Building
GE Lighting has made a significant breakthrough in the move toward greater standardization of LED light engines with the announcement of its first *Zhaga-compliant products.

Suffolk Y JCC Overhauls Energy System, Cuts Costs
Going green has paid off for the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, which received a rebate from National Grid for $98,000 Monday.
Over the past two years,There are 4 types of batteries found in goodledstrip systems today. the SYJCC has worked with the utility company and M.C. Alliance Energy Group on a $200,000 project to upgrade their boiler and hot water systems.
The rebate covered almost half of the total cost of the project, with National Grid guaranteeing the upgrades will reduce natural gas costs enough to offset the remaining $102,000 in less than two years.
"These upgrades have reduced our overall energy consumption and increased the comfort of our facility while helping improve the environment," Jack Simeone, director of facilities at the SYJCC, said in a statement.Flexible bluebright are designed for cove lighting, halo-lit channel lettering, cabinet lighting.
System upgrades at the facility were much needed, according to Lee Westerfield, lead program manager of National Grid.Online shopping for r4onsale, flexible led strip, LED Car Light, under cabinet lighting, Led Ribbon, LED controller, LED dimmer,LED ... The building, a former school within the Commack District, was outdated and inefficient.

High efficiency flourescent lighting was installed in the facility's aquatic center, which cut the center's operating costs by about 75 percent, according to Tony Coppola, who worked closely on the project as managing partner at M.C.Buy ledlightbulbs22 from online bike shop Merlin Cycles and choose from a range of lights including Hope and Blackburn lights, Alliance Energy Group.
Deborah Cavanagh, a member of the SYJCC for more than a decade and a regular at the aquatic center, said she was very pleased with the lighting upgrade. "Its perfect, I'm very happy," she said, adding that the new lights give the pool a more outdoor feel.
According to SYJCC board member Jack Kulka, the reduction in natural gas emissions produced by the facility in two years is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by 80 acres of trees.
The money garnered from the rebate will fund scholarships for families in the community.

"We basically had the racks out in the room for a month while we were doing everything, and we sealed off that room while we were working on the rest of the house," says Cochenour. "We had the security system and the surveillance up and running, so we had everything locked down."
Two of the racks are dedicated more to the A/V side of the install, like the amplifiers and Blu-ray disc changers, while the other two lean toward the control aspects.
