Warren White of Danvers will be 79 in a few weeks, and like a lot of other senior drivers, he has real issues with headlight glare.

"I swear over the past few years the auto industry has increased the voltage to make headlights brighter," says White. "They're better for the driver but not for people in oncoming cars. There are times I pass another driver and I can't see anything. I'm blinded and I'm afraid I'll hit something."

After hearing White's complaint I figured he was talking about Xenon headlights, those stunningly bright, bluish-tinged lamps usually found on higher-end cars. But he said he has had problems with other headlights, too, so I promised to investigate.

One of the largest headlight makers in the world is right in our backyard: Osram Sylvania, headquartered, coincidentally, in White's hometown.

According to Greg Bibbo, product marketing manager for Sylvania's automotive lighting division, the average halogen headlight is indeed 40 to 70 percent brighter today than 20 years ago. Law enforcement has lined up against the bill
though, saying the cameras are cutting down on serious accidents in their
communities. Many lawmakers, citing concerns from their local sheriffs, said
they could not vote for the repeal, particularly since it had not been in effect
for even a year.

“I don’t want the blood on my hands that might be
caused by repealing it,” said state Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg.Light

eye-catching experiment titled “How Haunted is Your House?” dealt with a phantom

Kubinec said she was bothered by the way gender is
portrayed in marketing as well as the stereotypical jokes she heard from others,
so she created a survey that tested people’s beliefs based on their age.

focused on gender stereotyping because I hear so many people make stereotypical
jokes, so I wanted to make people aware that they are hurtful, and I wanted to
display it with actual results,” Kubinec explained.
The St. Ignatius High
School student found that older adults tend to believe gender stereotypes, but
that the trend rapidly declines for the 17- to 24-year-old demographic, a

Michael Kisro, a Grade 6 student from Sacred
Heart School in Sioux Lookout, built a miniature steam-powered boat using only
copper tubing and a candle to propel it forward, demonstrating the properties of
steam and water pressure.
“I wanted to do a steam train but that would be a
bit harder,” said Kisro, who spent one day building the boat and another two
constructing his board of information.

We are normally

adverse effects time zone displacement had on his flying proficiency and
struggled to evade them. It has now been determined that the human body can

Just as there are 24-hour rhythms, there are biological cycles occurring
on monthly (lunar) intervals, as well as on an annual scale. It is this seasonal
calendar within man and horse that is affected by the waning days, and the long
cold nights that accompany them.

Deep inside the brain of all animals is a small organ called the pineal
gland. In humans, it is the size of a small pea and shaped like a pine cone
(hence its name). Also called the "third eye" (because of its nerve connection
to the other two), early anatomists were at a loss to describe a function for
the pineal. Rene Descartes believed it to be the seat of the soul, since it was
the only structure in the skull not directly connected to the brain. Early in
this century, scientists had concluded that it was a vestigial organ like the
appendix and no longer had a function in the body.

researchers removed the pineal glands of 200,000 cattle, ground them up, and

the amount of darkness the animal perceived in a day. The longer the "night,"
the more melatonin was produced. It appeared that melatonin had an inhibitory
