GreenStar Products Inc., a lighting company that moved to San Antonio from Boerne last year, has signed a deal with Toshiba that will greatly expand GreenStar's reach and boost its local employment.

This night, it is again filled with Irishmen who were jailed by the British. They should have notified the Guinness book of records, jokes host Ruan O'Donnell, historian and author of a new book on the Irish Republican Army: "We might have claimed the record for the highest number of prisoners trying to get back into a jail."

The Chennai Corporation will soon replace 2,795 streetlights in slums in its nine zones with solar-powered LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps.

Opposition Leader Saidai P. Ravi said that the services of Neel Metal Fanalca, the agency handing waste management in four zones, were not up to the desired level in many areas.
When resolutions 29 and 30 on transfer of revolving funds to self-help groups formed under the Swarna Jayanthi Sahari Rojgar Yojana were taken up for discussion, Councillor of ward 16, S.Meena alleged that over Rs.1 crore was transferred to the accounts of 700-odd groups in March after the model code of conduct came into force.
She also said “the list of Below Poverty Line persons was finalised at random. The scheme does not have a proper project officer.”

The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has rocketed despite the recession according to the International Energy Authority's latest figures reported here in the Guardian.
The figures show that a record 30.6 giga tonnes of carbon dioxide was added to the atmosphere in 2010 mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. That is a rise of 1.6 giga tonnes from 2009.

The news comes despite previous predictions that a recession might have provided some respite from increases in CO2.

"Economically, the optimists argued that the great recession of 2008-09 would give governments and industrialists a vital breathing space. A contracting world economy would naturally reduce carbon emissions; meantime, public and private sectors could strike a green new deal that would begin a shift towards low-carbon growth. Today's figures give the lie to all that: the link between GDP growth and greenhouse gases remains overwhelming."
Later the column continues: "Industrially, the great bet was that rich countries would wean themselves off fossil fuels and on to a mix of nuclear and renewable fuels. Yet Fukushima has prompted Germany, Italy and Switzerland to mothball their nuclear power projects."
So what exactly can individuals and in particular individual investors do about this given that the world's political and business leaders seem to be overwhelmed by the task.
Well according to some reports doing nothing is increasingly not an option even if viewed exclusively in terms of investment returns.

LED bulbs move in and mix up home lighting
In the space of a few years, I've gone from one lighting technology to another and now to three lighting types in my home. I suspect others will be in the same shoes as lighting options expand, notably those involving LEDs.
Eager to cut down my electrical load, I essentially converted to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs) years ago. Recently, though, I've replaced CFLs with efficient LED bulbs and even energy-hogging incandescents to address an unfortunate feature of CLFs: turning them on and off frequently degrades their life.
Home lighting diversifies, led by LEDs (photos)
CLFs are still a good deal both financially and environmentally. They use about one quarter of the energy of incandescent bulbs and will last about 10 years, or 10 times as long, according to Consumer Reports tests. But Consumer Reports also found that turning a CFL on and off within less than 15 minutes, something you might do in the bathroom for instance, leads to earlier-than-expected brownouts.
That rapid cycling issue, plus the arrival of good LEDs in the traditional A19 bulb shape, got me rethinking my home lighting and prodded me to use different bulb types for different purposes. I'm still focused on efficiency, so I'm only using incandescent bulbs in places where the light is used in short spurts. I tend to go in and out of the attic quickly, for example,An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. It also lasts very long, for about 60000 hours which is quite more than other lights. and want full brightness as soon as possible.
I've also added a few LEDs, which are certainly more expensive--a 60-watt incandescent replacement costs almost $40--but functionally they have been good CFL replacements and are more efficient per lumen. I have a few Philips LEDs that give off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent or a 14-watt CFL, and they consume 12 watts.
It will take a long time based on energy savings compared with CFLs to recoup the initial cost. On the other hand, LEDs are supposed to last upward of 20 years, and I placed them in fixtures that we flick on and off frequently, which I hope will address the burnouts I've experienced with CFLs.
LEDs multiply
You don't yet see general-purpose LED bulbs at the supermarket or corner hardware store, but more products in the popular 60-watt-equivalent category are coming, and prices are expected to continue falling. In the space of the last few weeks, a couple of new LED companies have emerged, and one anticipated product (well, anticipated by lighting geeks at least) is expected in stores soon.

Switch Lighting, backed by venture capital firm VantagePoint Capital Partners, plans in the fourth quarter to start selling an LED bulb which has a cooling system that it says will ensure long life--on the order of 20,000 hours, or 18 years, at three hours a day. The company is readying 40-watt, 60-watt, and 75-watt equivalent bulbs, with prices starting at less than $20, according to a representative. To make light dispersal more even, the LED light sources--small coin-size dots--are located near the edge of the bulb glass, a change from the typical "snowcone" shape.
Another company is Pixi Lighting, which introduced an A19 LED earlier this month. It has a color rendering index (CRI) of 90, a measure of light quality, and a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, or white light. The 40-watt equivalent, which uses 6.5 watts, has been in an overhead fixture in my house for a few weeks and I find the light quality is good.
Lighting Sciences Group will offer two 60-watt equivalent LEDs with some impressive "feeds and speeds" slated to be available online and in Home Depot nationally by the end of the second quarter, according to the company. Rather than the snowcone shape, the bulb has a thick disk on top of a heat sink to disperse light evenly.
There will be both a "cool white" and "warm white" version.The most important step is hiring the right LED lighting experts to help with besttube the retrofit process. The cool white will give off 950 lumens, have a CRI of 88, consume 13 watts, and have a cool color temperature of 4,900 Kelvin. That product is already available at some Home Depot stores and costs $36.97. The warm white will give off 850 lumens,The retrofit process itself can range from a simple count of existing lamps to a brightshine very detailed energy survey, which includes collecting information from your existing lighting, consume 13 watts, have a CRI of 88,An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. But now GE has an "omnidirectional" LED bulb where the heat sink diffuses light. Cree, too, is working on a 60-watt replacement LED bulb that prioritizes even light along with efficiency (less than 10 watts) and life.

The State of Green Furnishings
A chair could change a century and perhaps a planet. Sadly, while Tokyo burns, the home-furnishings industry’s green-innovations seem to hover around the hopeful,Under efforts of led spotlight boosting the viability of LED luminaires, many companies are expanding high-power selections. yet in seeming limbo, out-of-touch with the times, though some small visionaries are exploring one or two singular aspects of sustainability.
Asked for an honest assessment of the “State of Green and Sustainability” at New York trade show, ICFF,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), we traipsed through three very-cool satellite showrooms, one high-end showroom, and the whole ICFF show floor (at the Javits Center) before we finally heard smart talk from a visionary manufacturer. Someone is doing their homework and we loved hearing words like “biocide release,Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb change of custody in the supply chain and resource conservation.” Our midterm grade for all the other designers who should get to their green homework: a sad C. Herewith is our first Report Card and highlights of the green and sustainable trends from ICFF 2011.
Sad Grade “C” Comments: We do know salacious sells, (and thankfully also raises consciousness).Light up the architecturally table lamps interesting parts of your home. While we did see exciting trends with aspects of green consciousness, we saw less innovation than we hoped for. The prize for the most astonishing comments heard go to two shall-be-unnamed manufacturers, one a widely-acclaimed earth-oriented and “conscious business” and the other a major industrial player. When asked about the sustainability of its materials, the too-casual representative of the well-known, designer-driven brand touted for its sensitivity for the environment and zen-like consciousness of living in balance said, “Well, with the teak, we try, sometimes the source is unknown and with the horn bowl, we have no idea what animal it comes from, I think it’s a by-product.” His booth companion rep looked bored with the whole discourse, while he promised to get a better answer. (I’m waiting for it to appear in my email box.)
Less surprising, but still deeply disturbing, was the self-assured comment from one of America’s leading industrials on the material source of their plastic light fixtures. “Well, it’s a plastic that’s been used for years so that means it’s safe.” I guess she never heard of asbestos or skipped the training on MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for which her company is famous for,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales opting instead for a AMPS, (A Mani-Pedi Session; for those who haven’t heard this expression before, it refers to a partially-sexist comment, “she was getting a manicure/pedicure when she should have been doing her homework”).
On a more promising and happier note, we are delighted to report on trends and highlights seen on the show floor and at Noho and Soho showroom openings.
Joinery is hot. No glue! No nails! The use is the structure!: We noticed designers everywhere by-passing the by-products of labor and materials and the less-sustainability of glue, nail or screw joinery to ingeniously craft designs which fit together naturally. From the rubber band holder by Craighton Bernman, whose changing design is also its function, seen at the “Use Me” show, the 6th produced by the American Design Club featuring 45 young American designers of “unapologetically functional objects,” to Oscar Magnus Narud’s Keel series of very macho feeling metal wedged-into-wood stools and and furningshings, (the exhibit is called “’Make Me’/ Butch Craft”) at the legendary Soho design lab Moss, and finally to Tom Dixon, who does Ikea with style plus stools at ICFF, the satisfying feeling of effortless joining is a new green trend. And it is older than time. We like the phrase “joinery as ornament” from Thos. Moser, a traditional manufacturer where the dovetail has been an everyday basic for centuries.

Summer reading will be a wide world of fun this summer at the Porter County Public Library! Our theme this year is “One World, Many Stories.” All PCPLS library branches offer the independent summer reading program for children ages 2 through 18 (still in High School). Registration for summer reading starts Monday, June 6 at all branch youth departments. The last day to register is Saturday, July 2.
Each participant receives a reading booklet to record the titles of the books they read.It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. All books must come from the Porter County Public Library system. After you register and get your booklet, then you read, read, read to complete the requirements for your age group. Once you’ve completed the reading requirements, turn in your booklet (at the same branch where you registered) and win fun prizes! (Preschoolers and students who have completed Gr. K-8 will also receive a Read & Ride voucher for the Porter County Fair. This voucher provides a discount on the carnival ride wristband – good for any one day, Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29.) You can turn in your booklet for prizes as soon as you’ve completed the reading requirements. The last day to pick up prizes is Saturday, July 16.

Generational Differences in Digital Literacy: Are Young People Really More Gifted With Technology?
I frequently hear adults marvel at how easy use of the computer comes to younger people, or even explain the difficulty they themselves have with computers as being due to their age. “I can’t learn like they can anymore,” they say. The generational stereotypes associated with use of computers and technology seem to be widely held. But, how true are they? Why do these differences exist? Is there something about youth that gives an inherent advantage in learning one’s way around computers?
About ten years ago, terms were coined in an attempt to characterize and explain these differences.1 “Digital Natives” describe the generation born into our digital world. They have never known a world without computers. “Digital Immigrants” describe those born before the digital world, who adopted digital technologies later in life. Some argue that because they did not learn digital and technological literacies early in life, these skills will never come to them as easily or quickly as they do for digital natives. Indeed, fMRI’s of the brain behaviors of younger and older people while using a computer shows differences between the groups.2 Does this mean that digital immigrants are fated to struggle more just to gain the same skills as their younger counterparts?
Several studies have been done to explore these questions further. One examined two different groups of middle aged adults.3 One group had prior experience to searching on the Internet and were considered “web -savvy,” while the other group had little or no experience searching the Internet and were considered “webna?ve.” MRI’s taken of participant’s brains as they searched showed that the web-savvy group had much higher activity throughout the brain than the webna?ve group. However, perhaps even more interesting, is that after one week of searching on the internet for 1 hour a day, the web-na?ve group showed brain activity had increased and was now similar to the web-savvy group.4
Our brains are constantly being shaped by our experiences, as the above study shows.
