It's that time of year when we're choked to the gills with lists of resolutions for the New Year, pinning our hopes to attain generally impractical goals to the more or less arbitrary beginning of the year.
And who am I to buck a trend? Here are some resolutions you can adopt that will help protect California's deserts. What distinguishes this list of resolutions from most others is that these are all either easy, or fun, or both.
California's deserts are ground zero in the U.S. for industrial solar energy development. At some point in 2012 you can expect to see an LED bulb as bright as a 60-watt incandescent bulb drop down below the $10 level -- about where compact fluorescents were a decade or so ago.
Even if you stick with incandescents for now, changing your outdoor lighting can make a huge difference. A significant amount of energy is wasted when we use outdoor fixtures that allow light to shine toward the sky. Slap a reflective hood on that thing, cut the wattage by about half, and you're doing your part to save energy while helping the stars shine a little brighter.
You've probably guessed the reason for this resolution: the desert is the preferred location for Southern California landfills. Selectman gets energy audit, notes significant improvement
Hal Clark, and the rest of the Board of Selectmen, have been urging residents to get energy audits, but Clark did not quite know what to expect when he got his done over the weekend.
"I didn't know what they were going to find, because it's an all-electric house. When I purchased the townhouse, I was told the insulation was thicker since it's all-electric. I had no idea the problem we had with the sliding glass doors. I wish I had known that -- I would've done something six or seven years ago. Mackowski began measuring the home with a laser measuring tool, while his partner went on a tour of the house with Clark. The auditors pointed out some places they felt there might be issues, then the two set up a fan on the front door to help identify where the air leaks were coming from. Mackowski used a tool that blows smoke to identify some of the air leaks.
"What was interesting was, when they took the air out of the house, they took me around the house and showed me where air was coming in. The good news is that there isn't much air coming in," Clark said. Clark said he was satisfied with the audit and that it was better than the one he had the first time around.

The figures show that a record 30.6 giga tonnes of carbon dioxide was added to the atmosphere in 2010 mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. That is a rise of 1.6 giga tonnes from 2009.

The old incandescent light bulbs are on the way out, and a team of companies are jumping in with a new generation of efficient LED lighting.

Already, the new LED lighting is being put to use in a Canadian Factory and the bulbs haven't faded at all. Although the initial cost is higher than standard bulbs, the energy savings and reduced need for replacements will save money over the long haul.

They'll next be installed in six miles of New York City subway.

Say what you will about U2. Name another band that can fill a stadium these days... Time's up. Drawing a blank? That's because there aren't any -- certainly not any from this era. That said, you've got to give it the band its props: Without question, it can still put asses in the seats. Just the same, let's remember: The band has had more than three decades to cultivate its following. That's an eternity by today's standards.
By contrast, openers, the Fray -- who, along with U2's many other descendents, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Muse, Arcade Fire,While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to have improved greatly with recent updates. is the the closest we come to something that passes for iconic these days -- is a bit of a marvel for still standing after two records and nearly a decade in the game. That said, not to take anything away from U2 or those bands, but c'mon, is it really all that noteworthy to be the tallest guy in a room full of short people?

But let's forget about all that for a moment, and talk about the actual tour itself. There's certainly been no shortage of folks, particularly within the U2 camp, willing to pat themselves on the back for the grandiosity of the whole spectacle. And to be clear, it is a spectacle. The towering, ostentatious structure -- which, you can probably see from space, and which takes nearly as long to erect as it took God to speak us into existence -- is truly something to behold, the revolving bridges, the giant LEDs, the dazzling illumination.
But is it truly magnificent, or have we simply become so accustomed to not being dazzled in this new century that all you need to win us over is a few megatons of steel and some flashing lights? Are we are so easily awed that we're oblivious to the fact that what we have here is really a lot of sizzle and not a lot of steak?
As I looked around at the awestruck expressions plastered to the faces of those around me as the band lowered its LED screens, cloaking itself with a mesh of screens that resembled a giant bug zapper during "Zooropa" and the fittingly titled "City of Blinding Lights," I couldn't help but be reminded of that scene from A Bug's Life, in which one winged creature pleads with another: "No! Hurry! No! Don't look at the light!" Inexplicably drawn to the glowing display, his counterpart responds intoxicatingly: "I can't help it. It's so beautiful." That, as you might recall, is immediately followed by the unmistakable sound of his demise, BZZZT!
I will give them this, though: there really wasn't a bad seat in the house. As advertised,In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly the sight lines were mostly unobstructed. The only place in the stadium that might have been less desirable were the seats of those who happened to be seated behind the stage in the South Stands. It's not that you couldn't see. It's just that although Larry Mullen's drum riser rotated, and Bono and the other guys made a concerted effort to journey across the bridges to the outside track that circled the stage, where they played to the various sides of the stadium, for the most part, the outfit played facing the opposite direction.
But I'm just nitpicking here, really; you could lodge such a complaint with that sort of seating arrangement at any show. Most shows block that section off, actually.Philips LED business is inside of Philips lighting so it Led light is more difficult to determine whether they are meeting expectations. There really isn't an effective way to play in the round a full 360° -- well, unless the stage rotated constantly (talk about vertigo.) Fortunately, there was plenty else to distract those folks.

IMS Research says that Veeco is inching its way towards Aixtron in the MOCVD reactor market. While Veeco was the number one provider of MOCVD tools in China and Europe, Aixtron led in Korea, Taiwan and the USA.
IMS Research’s latest “Quarterly GaN LED Supply and Demand Report” says that although Q1’11 MOCVD installations were down, ending a 7-quarter streak of sequential growth, the 2011 outlook remains bright for MOCVD and other upstream equipment and materials suppliers.
Global merchant MOCVD reactor shipments fell 18% Q/Q while rising 31% Y/Y to 194 units LED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with better price-performance ratios.with GaN LEDs the dominant application with a 97% share. Veeco gained a point of market share to 44% of total MOCVD reactor shipments and maintained its 44% of the GaN MOCVD market. Aixtron maintained its leadership position in both segments, losing a point of market share in total MOCVD from 53% to 52% and maintaining a 53% share of the GaN MOCVD market.

legalizing red light cameras at traffic intersections, a new crops of
legislators wants to slam on the brakes.
The House Appropriations
Committee Wednesday voted 12-9 to repeal the law passed a year ago that has led
municipalities across the state to install red lights at traffic intersections.
Rep. Richard Corcoran, R-Trinity, the House sponsor of the bill, said
that there have been numerous problems with the cameras and many counties are
throwing out traffic cases spurred by red light camera photos.
“Let’s
step back and figure out a way where we can make these intersections safer for
our communities,” he said.
Law enforcement has lined up against the bill
though, saying the cameras are cutting down on serious accidents in their
communities. Many lawmakers, citing concerns from their local sheriffs, said
they could not vote for the repeal, particularly since it had not been in effect
for even a year.
“I don’t want the blood on my hands that might be
caused by repealing it,” said state Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg.Light

Chelsea Kubinec’s experiment may

School student found that older adults tend to believe gender stereotypes, but
that the trend rapidly declines for the 17- to 24-year-old demographic, a
promising result to be sure.
Michael Kisro, a Grade 6 student from Sacred
Heart School in Sioux Lookout, built a miniature steam-powered boat using only
copper tubing and a candle to propel it forward, demonstrating the properties of
steam and water pressure.
“I wanted to do a steam train but that would be a
bit harder,” said Kisro, who spent one day building the boat and another two
constructing his board of information.
