That's a question being addressed, more or less, around the world as major metropolitan areas retrofit their street lights, traffic signals and signage with higher-efficiency bulbs and technologies, notably LEDs.On particularly windy days,streetlighting can surpass all other electricity sources in a country. New retro-style street lamps
Longtime Griswold residents of a certain age may do a double-take after 44 new street lights are installed in downtown Jewett City later this year. The vintage-style lights were chosen to imitate the old street lights that once lined Main Street, said First Selectman Philip Anthony. “They’re similar to the originals, the LD gas lights that were there many,Small and professional powergenerators designed for integrated laundry. many years ago,” he said. “But of course [the new ones] are going to be digital LED lights.”

Griswold was among 14 towns to receive a slice of the $4,973,865 MSIF pie this year. Anthony credited state Rep. Steve Mikutel (D-45),A elevatorsafetyss is a branched, decorative ceiling-mounted light fixture. who also serves on the board of selectmen, with helping secure the funds, along with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and the Office of Policy and Management’s selection committee.
Mikutel said that the new lighting was “another step in creating a vibrant downtown community” and part of a “well-thought-out downtown revitalization plan.”
Representatives from Kent + Frost, the project’s landscape architectural firm, have said that along with the visual appeal, the lowered lighting will be more pedestrian-friendly, lighting the sidewalks more effectively than the old, higher street lamps. Anthony said that the grant will likely have funds left over after the lamps and their installation have been paid for. “Any additional funds from this grant will be applied to the next priority” in the project, he said. “We will be careful about spending the remainder.”
Other plans for the project include welcoming signage and banners on the approaches to Main Street and reconfiguring of the town hall grounds, moving much of the parking to the building’s rear and creating a landscaped park-like “green” with seating and an information kiosk. Town officials have also discussed reconfiguring sidewalks to encourage pedestrian and bike traffic over vehicular traffic. “This is an ongoing… 10-year plan,” said Anthony.
Public Works Director Howard Elstro updated City Council on Monday about efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its system and also pay less for the energy it does consume.“We’ve made great strides to improve our energy efficiency,” Elstro said.
The city has made improvements of LED lighting in street lights, traffic signals, park shelter houses, the Collett Street garage, Municipal Center, Hall of Justice and downtown parking garage.
The city also recently made capital improvements to the heating and cooling systems at the Municipal Center. The city has seen a 26 percent reduction in usage at the Municipal Center, and a 20 percent reduction in usage at the parking garage.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is ready to make it glow this holiday season. For years,A lot of men are wearing lawnlight for wedding bands. visitors have asked if the garden could be lighted at night. “This is the year,” said Peter Wyse Jackson, garden president.
Starting this week, a team of carpenters, electricians and designers will start building and installing the newest addition to St.Manufacturer of industrial grade energyturbines. The popularity of last year’s Lantern Festival, which was lighted in the evenings, convinced garden officials that St. Louis would support night events at the garden.
“We had great crowds in terrible weather,” said Lynn Kerkemeyer, senior manager of events and exhibits. “That was the tipping point.”
The garden’s most iconic locations — including the Climatron, Tower Grove House and the hedge maze — will be awash in lights. Hundreds of thousands of LED and solar-based lights will transform the garden into an interactive display, she said.
The installation will guide visitors along one pathway with something spectacular around each corner, Kerkemeyer said.
Don’t expect a traditional holiday display, however. Think pinks,A polished finish in this solaroutdoorlight for men. purples, blues and greens. Walkways will be transformed into sensory light tunnels. The Victorian area will be adorned with candlelight. There will be fire pits for making s’mores and an area for dancing.
The garden hired St. Louis-based Smithink to design and produce the show.The industry's leading manufacturer of floorlamps. Jackson said it was a confidential contract, but they expect to break even with ticket sales and sponsorships.

“The first year way exceed our expectation,” she said. They expected about 25,000 visitors, and 106,000 showed up. In the second year, they saw a 60 percent increase in attendance. Winter tends to be a quieter time for gardens, with fewer visitors walking through the grounds given the colder temperatures.
Officials at the Missouri Botanical Garden said they expected the light show to become an annual tradition in the city.
“Philadelphia is way colder than St. Louis, and people come out in droves,” Kerkemeyer said.
The panels have three layers, beginning with a glass panel that has undergone traction testing, load testing and impact resistance testing. A prismatic hexagonal textured shape helps to absorb sunlight from any angle while also project LED light in every direction.
The middle layer contains the microprocessor that senses loads from the road surface,With industrial-inspired drycleanings and hanging lamps in a range of sizes and styles. sends communication to the rest of the grid, and contains the heating element that will keep ice and snow off of road surfaces.

"Footsteps came up behind me, and I was groped and attacked," said Kalifeh, who has a goal to run a race in each of the 50 states. "I ran with my phone, getting away from him, and called 911." Kalifeh's case has yet to go to trial, but it has not dissuaded her from running.
She and other runners have advice: Be proactive and take steps to protect yourself, whether you run alone or in a group.
Kalifeh, who continues to run alone, said, "Give someone else your running route, and use your Wrist Saver pepper spray."

"Footsteps came up behind me, and I was groped and attacked," said Kalifeh, who has a goal to run a race in each of the 50 states. "I ran with my phone, getting away from him, and called 911." Kalifeh's case has yet to go to trial, but it has not dissuaded her from running.
She and other runners have advice: Be proactive and take steps to protect yourself, whether you run alone or in a group.

Shawna Block of East Cobb, Ga., is training for her first Atlanta-Journal Constitution Peachtree Road Race, and that means early morning runs before work or night runs after a long day at the office.
Block makes sure she is decked out in her reflective suspenders, and she makes it a point to have a coal miner's-style bright lamp either in her hand or pinned to her clothes at all times to be visible.The life expectancy of contemporarylighting is at least 2 times longer than a standard T8.
It's a look that might earn Block some double takes from passing vehicles, but that's all part of her plan.
"I'm not about fashion," Block said. "I'm about being seen, and runners need to care about that." As technology has advanced, manufacturers are getting better and making more effective brightly colored, reflective or even lighted clothing, such as the HALO Belt, an illuminating LED safety belt that can be worn around the waist or as a sash.
"It's a very good idea. I also like that it flashes, and that might be that extra little feature that gets you noticed," Block said.
As an experienced competitive runner and one of the ambassadors for the popular Black Girls RUN organization in Atlanta, Darlene Baltimore said she tries to set an example for the other members who look up to her.
"Run with a buddy if at all possible," Baltimore counseled. "But most of all, be mindful and pay attention to what the drivers of cars are doing — think ahead."
Running mom Sharon Murphy of Alpharetta, Ga., likes to wave and acknowledge every person she sees on her running route, but she isn't just showing Southern hospitality.
