And who could blame them?
Because the builder-turned-showman’s new venture – the Museum of Amusements at the Bluecoat – is an innocent pleasure palace of vintage arcade machines that are all about skill rather than greed, and that naturally bring out the child in everyone who pops an old penny in a slot.
“They all had arcades,” he recalls, “and I used to save up my pocket money and wait for them to come. I worked on the milk and had a paper round. There was a skill behind most machines.”
The first machine he owned himself was a one-armed bandit given to him by a friend, but he says he was never really interested in the gambling aspect of the fairground arcade.
But that initial donation, 25 years ago, was just the start. “I mainly source a lot of them from seaside resorts. I’ve had a lot from the East coast. And I’ve also bought some on eBay.”
Mablethorpe has proved a particularly happy hunting ground.I have tried several sets of emergencylampsqa that have lasted one season only. The small seaside resort on the Lincolnshire coast has long been known for its traditional seaside amusement arcades.
Bob says: “On one trip I went to pick up a machine and the guy I was buying it from opened up these double doors and said ‘are you interested in these?’ and there was the best collection of machines since the 1930s. He was a showman and he’d kept everything.
I was cartwheeling in my head.
I’ve gone to Mablethorpe 10 times in five years, and every time he’s brought out beautiful machines. He had to see I was a nice person before he’d sell me anything.
“He knew I was going to build an arcade – that’s been an ambition of mine probably for 20 years.”
The earliest piece of end-of-the-pier history the 50-year-old owns dates from 1895 and is a very rare cast iron ‘test your strength’ machine, which he discovered in a garden 10 miles from his current home in Cheshire.
“It was a guy advertising a machine on eBay and he took a photo of it in his back garden,” he explains. I got out a magnifying glass because I could see the foot of something else.
I emailed him on the Saturday night saying if you’ve got any other machines I’d be interested. Then myself and the wife and kids went away to Wales for a week’s holiday. Luckily for Bob, while they may not share his obsession, he appears to have an understanding family. By the same evening,The autoledbulbsiss is not only critical to professional photographers. holiday cut short, he was at the man’s front door and about to confirm his exciting discovery.
“He had cast iron machines in his hall,” Bob remembers. And under the TV stand was a very rare cast iron gripper. By this time I was rattling in my boots. In the garden he pulled off a sheet and there was this tester.
The Victorian strength-tester is still in storage, but several dozen examples in Bob’s prized collection are now being housed in a unit at the Bluecoat in School Lane.

Ultracapacitor-based Energy Storage System
A
week ago, Maxwell Technologies announced they had been “been awarded a
$1.39 million contract by the California Energy Commission’s Research
and Development program to fund design and integration of an
ultracapacitor-based energy storage system with Soitec’s CPV system
located on the campus of University of California, San Diego—one of the
nation’s greenest universities— and a second commercial scale system at
Soitec’s solar power plant in Southern California.Our most compact modernlighting yet fits easily in any bag.” This project was to start immediately and run through November 2015.
I seized upon the opportunity to email Maxwell some questions about the future of energy storage. Shaw Lynds, the senior systems engineer at Maxwell, responded. Note that Mr Lynds says that while small micro-grid solar systems may soon be able to operate without a back-up system, it is still too expensive to develop an adequate energy storage system that would allow the grid to run 100% on solar energy. That is why they are focusing on ironing out “fluctuations of up to 5 minutes.” Yet it would seem almost inevitable that some year, in the not too distant future, solar energy will be able to supply all of our power needs.
Q. To what extent will the technology that you and Soitec are working on compensate for the fluctuations in solar energy?
Our goal is to completely eliminate output fluctuations of less than 30 seconds and provide significant smoothing of fluctuations of up to 5 minutes. The goal of this demonstration is that show that solar can achieve high penetration in the grid without need of large amounts of spinning reserve to keep the grid stable.
Q. Do either solar or wind energy have problems with power surges and does your technology eliminate this problem?
Both of these technologies are vulnerable to power surges, however this is outside the scope of what this project plans to demonstrate.
Q. What part of the work will be done of the UC San Diego campus?
Our partner Soitec currently has a 22kW CPV tracker system located on the UCSD campus that has been running for several years now. Under this project we plan to add 2.5 kWh of ultracapacitor energy storage to that system to demonstrate the large benefits that even a small amount of energy storage can add to a solar installation.
Q. Can you give an a guesstimate of how long it will be before solar energy can be stored for weeks? (Two years? Five years? Ten years?)
5-10 years at minimum before it is economically viable to store energy on these kind of time scales. This is why we are focusing on shorter time scale firming where we believe energy storage can do the most good in the near term.
Q. Can you see a day when, as a result of the development of energy storage technologies, there will be no need for a back-up to solar energy?

Square monuments to emerge from darkness
The spotlights cast a ghoulish orange glow. Much of the light falls on the pedestals and the tree canopies above, so the upper reaches of the monuments gradually blend into the night sky. The statue of Gen. James Oglethorpe in Chippewa Square seems poised to jump out of the darkness; the hulking obelisks of Johnson and Wright squares ready to topple over.
What’s cool in late October makes some Savannahians hot the rest of the year. The orange glow of the monuments is not seasonal; it’s the natural color cast by the sodium vapor spotlights.
“It looks rather ugly,” said Ardis Wood, a downtown resident, walking tour guide and admitted lighting afficianado. “We have these beautiful,Our cleaningmachine is good in quality and competitive in price. detailed monuments, but at night you can’t tell.”
The monuments won’t be in the dark for much longer. The city of Savannah, in cooperation with Wood, the Downtown Neighborhood Association, the Historic Savannah Foundation and Sottile & Sottile architects, is developing a monument lighting strategy.
The group recently tested a plan by Sottile & Sottile on Wright Square’s two monuments.a full range of cylinder heated long lasting antiquelampas. Sottile & Sottile employed the same approach the firm used in the lighting around the SCAD Museum of Art. They used small, strategically placed LED bulbs to light the Gordon Monument, the obelisk in the square’s center, as well as the squatChina ledcornlightss manufacturer supply elevator light curtain, Tomochichi’s rock in the square’s southeast quadrant.
The results, according to Woods, were “dramatic.”

Monument lighting is the “final piece of the lighting puzzle” for the squares, according to the man who oversees care of the squares for the city, Jerry Flemming.
The city has been overhauling square lighting over the last two years. Pedestrian paths have been the focus, with an eye toward public safety and energy efficiency. Lantern lights have been replaced along River and Bay streets and within Lafayette, Whitefield and Wright squares.

We’d like the squares to be equally as charming at night as they are during the day.”

Flemming envisions gradual replacement of monument lighting on other squares — as the existing lights fail or burn out, the new lights will be installed.
“The lighting technology has come so far so fast, the new stuff is much more energy efficient,” Flemming said. “We’ll save over time by installing new fixtures rather than just replacing bulbs. And the squares will be more pleasing to the eye at the same time.”

John and Frances Angelos Law Center
Vice President Joe Biden, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, and other legal luminaries convene in midtown Baltimore today to attend a preview of the John and Frances Angelos Law Center at the University of Baltimore. The 192,000-square-foot building, designed by Behnisch Architekten in partnership with Ayers Saint Gross, consolidates classrooms, offices, clinics,Buy laundrydryer001 and prescription goggles with a custom Glasses prescription. and a library for the first time in the School of Law’s 88-year history.
“Any investment had to speak to the university—forward-looking, open to light, and defining the campus as a place,” says Robert Bogomolny, president of the University of Baltimore. “The only thing I wouldn’t do was contextualism,” he adds, referring to brick-faced structures built in Baltimore in the last decade. The Behnisch–Ayers Saint Gross team earned the commission for the Angelos Center after a 2008 open competition whose shortlist also included Foster + Partners, Dominique Perrault Architecture, Moshe Safdie and Associates, and SmithGroup.We're responsible for the installation and maintenance of flatworkironer.
Located at the meeting point of local arteries Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street, yet hemmed in on its north side by the Jones Falls Expressway and a corresponding ramp, the project’s wedge-like site is both “left over and an important neighborhood intersection,The lasermarker optical design yields more productive beam lumens and good cutoff.” as Behnisch partner Robert Matthew Noblett puts it. Unrestrained by the jumbled environment, Noblett explains that program drove the massing of the design,one of the most highly praised is t5tube. with the intended effect of beckoning people northward from downtown. He also refers to the building as a gateway for travelers arriving at Baltimore’s centenarian Pennsylvania Station across the freeway.
Although one story shorter than originally proposed, that massing faithfully abides the original winning concept. The 12-story building comprises interlocking forms representing different functions, which is made more legible by differing facades. Student and faculty spaces are skinned in a punched-window system veiled by glass rain screens, whereas the basket weave-fritted library volume folds over the top of the building and meets the middle of the east elevation. Glazing with operable windows and fixed louvers marks the building entrance, as well as all common spaces within.
The most spectacular of these shared spaces is the publicly accessible atrium that wends to the top of the Angelos Center.Save on energy and maintenance costs by replacing PAR halogen flood lights with purlinmachine. Not unlike Behnisch Architekten’s Genzyme Center in Boston, the Baltimore atrium aims to enhance communication between different occupants. Crisscrossing stairways resolve staggered floor heights between offices and classrooms, and breakout zones—identified by seating, ceiling-mounted acoustical dampeners, and maple countertops—encourage socializing and learning. Community members attend legal clinics via a separate, secure entrance.
Alongside radiant concrete slabs, rainwater capture, universal LED lighting, and other strategies, the atrium also contributes significantly to the environmental performance of the Angelos Center, which is projected to beat ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 by 35 percent and contribute to LEED-Platinum certification. A tempered opening in the roof permits a thermal chimney effect, as well as some natural illumination, yet due to summertime solar angles, daylight penetrates the building largely through the atrium glazing on the north and south elevations. Sidelighting has the added benefit of preserving views to the Beaux Arts train station.
“The quality of the space matches what you think of the people using it,” concludes Bogomolny, the university president. In addition to Tuesday’s preview, an official opening celebration for the Angelos Center will take place April 30, with remarks by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan and Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell, among others.
“Any investment had to speak to the university—forward-looking, open to light, and defining the campus as a place,” says Robert Bogomolny, president of the University of Baltimore. “The only thing I wouldn’t do was contextualism,” he adds, referring to brick-faced structures built in Baltimore in the last decade. The Behnisch–Ayers Saint Gross team earned the commission for the Angelos Center after a 2008 open competition whose shortlist also included Foster + Partners, Dominique Perrault Architecture, Moshe Safdie and Associates, and SmithGroup.We're responsible for the installation and maintenance of flatworkironer.
Located at the meeting point of local arteries Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street, yet hemmed in on its north side by the Jones Falls Expressway and a corresponding ramp, the project’s wedge-like site is both “left over and an important neighborhood intersection,The lasermarker optical design yields more productive beam lumens and good cutoff.” as Behnisch partner Robert Matthew Noblett puts it. Unrestrained by the jumbled environment, Noblett explains that program drove the massing of the design,one of the most highly praised is t5tube. with the intended effect of beckoning people northward from downtown. He also refers to the building as a gateway for travelers arriving at Baltimore’s centenarian Pennsylvania Station across the freeway.
Although one story shorter than originally proposed, that massing faithfully abides the original winning concept. The 12-story building comprises interlocking forms representing different functions, which is made more legible by differing facades. Student and faculty spaces are skinned in a punched-window system veiled by glass rain screens, whereas the basket weave-fritted library volume folds over the top of the building and meets the middle of the east elevation. Glazing with operable windows and fixed louvers marks the building entrance, as well as all common spaces within.
The most spectacular of these shared spaces is the publicly accessible atrium that wends to the top of the Angelos Center.Save on energy and maintenance costs by replacing PAR halogen flood lights with purlinmachine. Not unlike Behnisch Architekten’s Genzyme Center in Boston, the Baltimore atrium aims to enhance communication between different occupants. Crisscrossing stairways resolve staggered floor heights between offices and classrooms, and breakout zones—identified by seating, ceiling-mounted acoustical dampeners, and maple countertops—encourage socializing and learning. Community members attend legal clinics via a separate, secure entrance.
Alongside radiant concrete slabs, rainwater capture, universal LED lighting, and other strategies, the atrium also contributes significantly to the environmental performance of the Angelos Center, which is projected to beat ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 by 35 percent and contribute to LEED-Platinum certification. A tempered opening in the roof permits a thermal chimney effect, as well as some natural illumination, yet due to summertime solar angles, daylight penetrates the building largely through the atrium glazing on the north and south elevations. Sidelighting has the added benefit of preserving views to the Beaux Arts train station.
“The quality of the space matches what you think of the people using it,” concludes Bogomolny, the university president. In addition to Tuesday’s preview, an official opening celebration for the Angelos Center will take place April 30, with remarks by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan and Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell, among others.
