I love the Proms but hate the Albert Hall. It’s horribly uncomfortable, the audience facilities are dreadful; the long, snaking loo-queues that congest the corridors are an absurdity; and the small efforts that the Hall has made since last year to improve things have made little difference. It’s a dump. And London’s concert-going life would be improved immeasurably if the place were pulled down and replaced with an impressive new hall fit for purpose. Which of course is never going to happen.
But I have another issue with the way the BBC fits out the Hall during the Proms – and does so every year now, with a loathsome strip of panelled (I suppose LED) lighting round the platform that bathes everything in lurid colours and successfully transforms the auditorium into the likeness of a pole-dancing establishment in Porthcawl. Seriously tacky.
They don’t even use these lighting panels with imagination. For the opening of the Ring Cycle the other night, I’d hoped for dazzling visual effects to generate some atmosphere around the concert staging. But no, nothing.
Worse still, they provided nothing in the way of surtitles: a crazily missed opportunity.This is how a modernlamps captures energy from the wind. Being the Proms, it’s likely that a large proportion of that audience was new to Wagner, coming to the Cycle for the first time. To provide no surtitles was madness. And the fact that you could buy libretti was no substitute – (a) because following a printed libretto in a long performance is hard, especially if you’re sharing, and (b) because the BBC failed to print enough copies and they ran out.
That said, Rheingold was magnificent. The opposite of everything that Wagner had intended – given that he didn’t want the orchestra on show, and hid it at Bayreuth beneath a cover that conceals the pit – it was a fabulous display, in every sense, of beautiful orchestral playing, beautifully managed from the podium by Daniel Barenboim.
There was no fuss, no overstatement, no hysteria: just clear, straightforward, unadorned Authority. Capital A. I’ve rarely seen conducting of such purity and purpose, not a gesture wasted, totally productive of results. And what results.

Highlights of Clerkenwell Design Week
A patch of central London is festooned with pink this week, which can only mean Clerkenwell Design Week is in session once more. Lovely old buildings such as the Farmiloe Building, House of Detention and the Museum of the Order of St. John have opened their doors to designers and design enthusiasts on the lookout for inspiration. Armed with a camera, Gizmag went exploring, and was pleased to see one or two favorites among the novelties.
Wandering up James Walk towards the House of Detention, Gizmag caught a glimpse of a familiar shape out of the corner of its eye.Our cleaningmachine is good in quality and competitive in price. There in the grounds of St. James Church were three Tetra-Sheds, which seemed somehow different to the sleek black finish we saw in December of 2011. Architect David Ajasa-Adekunle explained that the new cork finish came as a result of a manufacturing partnership. Cork offers insulation and noise reduction, which should only enhance its appeal as place for quiet introspection. Sewell explains that where once the Hush acted as both a sit-in and a sit-on chair, for the sake of longevity the two forms have been divided. Again, it sound like Hushes are in demand.
Soft furnishings appear to be all the rage among Clerkenwell's office furniture showrooms, too. They're also cottoning on to the cocoon thing, apparently. Chairs, desks and meeting tables all seem to be enclosed in felt-like materials to create cozy spots for people to park up with a laptop. Gizmag chatted to a few sales reps to ask about the recent trend in standing desks (i.e. high desks one stands at, vaunted for health reasons). The view in Clerkenwell seems to be that this is more than a passing fad, though adjustable desks seem to be recommended to avoid fatigue.
For all the lighting on display, Clerkenwell Design Week is notably lacking in LEDs. Alas incandescent bulbs still seem to appeal to aestheticists (aesthetisticians?), the better to cast a warm glow on their ubiquitous paper lampshades. The designer-friendly fluorescent Plumen is also popular, though, so it's not all bad news.

Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have come way down in price and use one fourth of the energy that incandescent bulbs do while maintaining the same light output. Meaning that a 25 watt CFL bulb is just as bright as a 100 watt incandescent; the costs savings are easy to see. Light emitting diodes have been around for years, but using them in light bulbs is only becoming more popular. They are still a bit pricey, but have a much longer life than incandescent or CFL bulbs and do not have the harmful mercury that CFL bulbs do.

Campaigners fear open season on wind farms
CAMPAIGNERS behind a heavily supported petition on wind turbines have
accused the Scottish Government of failing to protect the area in new
guidelines.
New national planning framework proposals outline 43 areas across Scotland that should be shielded from wind turbine developments, with nowhere in Aberdeenshire or Moray included.

Police Advise Residents to 'Limit Their Exposure' to Would-Be Burglars
Little Silver Police Chief Dan Shaffery says that in all the interviews he's performed over the years of suspects accused of breaking into homes, the one common denominator is that they are all different.

Shaffery did say that while there's been a lot of speculation in Patch's comments section, police records don't show a "huge amount" of heroin- or cocaine-related arrests.
"That's not to say it's not happening," says Shaffery. "But you can't take a paintbrush and paint the issue with broad strokes."
The chief says there were a number of burglaries in town two or three years ago that involved a resident motivated by drug addiction.
Shaffery says that valuables are best secured in a safety deposit box or a safe that's attached to a wall, "so a thief can't just pick it up and run off with it."

"They don't come on right away in very cold weather and the delay is up to 10 seconds in illuminating," he said.
Those seconds are crucial because workers don't stop pumping water into the home until the light comes on.

Youngsters eager to light up talent show
MAGICIANS, dancers, contortionists and singers are set to take centre stage at a school when pupils organise their own major talent show.
Youngsters from Leighton Primary, in Crewe, are planning to hold auditions, recruit judges and sell tickets for the variety performance later this year.
But they are missing one key ingredient to make it a runaway success – a lighting system so contestants can step into the spotlight and show off their dazzling skills.
Now school councillors have entered The Sentinel's Class Act competition, which is sponsored by Barclays Money Skills, to help fund their big ideas.
If they win a 5,000 prize, it will pay for a professional lighting rig and also go towards a projector system to liven up their assemblies.
JJ Williams, aged five,They've been around for many many years but it wasn't until the late 1980's that there use was integrated into scubadivingflashlight. from Leighton, said: "The lighting would make the talent show look nice. We could have a trophy to give people who are really good."
The youngster is a keen musician and plays the guitar, drums and keyboard. Many other pupils also belong to dance groups and the school choir.
Pupils say the Leighton's Got Talent show would prove a popular addition to the school's events calendar. The lighting could also be used for end-of-year plays, seasonal shows like the nativity story,Limited supply LED Writing Board,bluebright,Fluorescence Board,Fluorescent Board,Menu Board, LED Menu Board.The Magicshine goodledlamp bicycle light was always the cheapest high power bike light available in the UK and it&rsquos just been upgraded. visiting performers, and regular school discos.

He said: "I would be mean. We could have singing, dancing and people doing weird body tricks. I know somebody who wants to do a rap."

She added: "If we had professional lighting, we could train up staff and support some of the children to use it.
