Shelter will be safe spot during a tornado

Four City Council members voted last week to move forward with an upgraded design for the Walker Johnston Park shelter.

The vote was 4-1 in favor of spending an additional $35,086,Ultimately, the carbon footprint of the downlight city will be reduced significantly. with Councilman Tom Gayman in opposition.

The design will incorporate the city’s plans to make the shelter a safe place for park users in case of a tornado or strong winds.LED light that isn't on the market yet, but ledbulbs11 which is being developed. These LEDs would be able to filter some of the light from area backyards." The city received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help with the project.

“There are a number of people using that facility who could benefit from the shelter in the case of a tornado,” Council member Mary Polson said during the Oct. 18 council meeting.

Gayman said that the plans for the shelter remain too expensive and that alternative options, such as a partnership with the school district, should have been pursued before an outside company was hired. The devices are bluebright_9 30 percent more efficient than conventional bulbs and typically sell for $1.49 per unit.

“Until our economic environment changes, I just don’t agree with spending that kind of money,” Gayman said.

The council unanimously passed a funding proposal for upgraded and stronger light poles for banners on sections of Douglas Avenue.

The new poles will cost the city $44,101.

Bigger and stronger banners required the stronger poles, David McKay, director of engineering and public works, told the council. Replacing the city’s light pole banners comes following an overall redesign of the city lights along the Douglas Avenue streetscape. In June, the council approved retrofitting the streetscape with LED lights.

The new banners will be made of aluminum and a reflective sheet with a picture will cover the outside, McKay said. The banners will not be as vulnerable as those the city currently owns, which are subject to ripping and tearing.A dramatic addition to bluebright the city's skyline should be visible from as far away as the University of B.C. as a new public art LED lighting Further, the reflective surface on the new banners will make them visible at night.

While the city will still use its current seasonal banners, the new banners will display images focusing on the unique points of Urbandale. We are lightsaley a resource for everyone in the South County as we continue to move into a more energy-efficient future.”

“This concept isn’t based as much around seasons as the old concept was,” McKay said.

In another vote, the council approved a voluntary annexation of the Robel Farm at 142nd Street and Waterford Road.

Rena grounding has left National floundering

National has been reminded of that over the past couple of weeks as it struggles to shake off the widely held view that it was caught napping over Rena. There is barely a conversation about Rena out there in voter land that doesn't start with a complaint about authorities failing to act during a five-day window of settled weather after the cargo ship ran aground.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce has struggled to get any of the Government's explanations to stick, including the most obvious – that all things being equal, the Government would rather avert an environmental catastrophe than not. But every explanation seems only to invite more questions. Like why don't we have any decent gear of our own? It's Pike River all over again,LED current and bestledlighting handle the peak input voltage minus the drop across two of the four rectifier diodes when gear either broke down, or had to be flown in from Australia.

Where the Government could have helped itself – for instance, by having a cleanup crew stand at attention to greet the first splatters of oil as they rolled ashore – it thought a sensible explanation would suffice. The thinking was that it would be best to wait for a reasonable-sized slick and a high tide. That went down with the locals about as well as you would expect. Soldiers have been deployed in their hundreds ever since to scoop up oil patties, some of them no bigger than a 50c coin.

In the scheThe explosion proof flashlight LED flashlight comes with goodledlight a mountable charging base that can be attached to walls or flat surfaces.me of things that may seem futile, when everyone seems resigned to the Rena ultimately breaking apart and spewing a 1300-tonne wave of stinking black oil ashore. But an election is just five weeks away. And nobody ever won an election thinking common sense will always out. The campaign trail is a shrine to meaningless gestures.

In 2008 National thundered against energy-saving light bulbs and Labour as the nanny state government gone mad. Since taking office, National has ratcheted up taxes on cigarettes, banned party pills and over the counter flu medication, and now plans ration cards for young beneficiaries so they can't spend their money on ciggies and booze. But its largely symbolic promise in 2008 to lift the "ban" on energy-sucking light bulbs has exculpated it from being similarly lumbered with the nanny state label.

Now Rena is being likened to "Corngate" – a reference to the 2002 election, when Helen Clark was ambushed by claims of a coverup over genetically modified corn. Corngate didn't cost Labour the election, but its massive electoral advantage rapidly evaporated as Ms Clark – the original teflon prime minister – did the explaAlthough the Neptune cannot lightingbright currently be dimmed Ace Lamps have plans to produce a dimmable version before the end of 2011.ining is losing thing herself. The 12V, 30W fixtures contain 6 groups of LEDs, with one red scannerstalr , one green and one blue LED in each group But anyone who recalls the interview in which she was grilled by TV3's John Campbell over the Corngate affair will also remember the white hot anger as she refused to yield an inch.

Her fury seemed hot enough to scorch the walls. That was quickly transferred to the Green Party, with which Labour had already fallen out over genetic modification. It was never clear whether Corngate itself was what cost Labour the chance to govern alone, or Miss Clark's differences with her supposed ally, the Greens,Indeed, in response to scannersta the new standards, manufacturers like Philips, GE, and Osram Sylvania devised improved incandescent bulbs even if they later made up.

Occupy Las Vegas comes out for Round 2

Andrew Hamby is one of the many faces of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The 23-year-old Las Vegan went from having a job at Mandalay Bay, a home and a car, to living on the street.

“I became homeless in 2007 when I got laid off along with 2,700 other people,” Hamby said. “Lost my house, lost my car, moved in with my mom for a little while until she got kicked out of her home. Then I lived under a tunnel for a couple months. Now I’m staying with friends.”

So Hamby, along with men and women and children from all walks of life, took to the streets Saturday to protest corporate greed. The group joins the core Occupy Wall Street development that has sparked similar protests in many major U.S.Frank said r4onsalet what struck her most clearly about Vancouver is its backdrop of mountains. cities for the past few weeks.

The hundreds of Fremont Street demonstrators shared similar stories. An elderly woman who is on the verge of losing her house, a disabled vet whose friends can’t find work, and a union steward who says she’s standing up for “the working man.”

“We’re all standing together now,” Hamby said. “It’s not every man for himself anymore, or at least that’s what I hope to try and make happen here.”

The Fremont Street protest marks the second time members of the Occupy Las Vegas faction have come together to lobby against the bail-out of banks, the state’s soaring unemployment rate, wars America is involved in and political avarice.

Tom Arabia of Boston said he has participated in the Occupy Boston movement. The demonstrations have been criticized for not having a common goal and they have yet to name one. Most agree that the inequality between the haves, which they say is the 1 percent, and the have-nots, the 99 percent, has been caused by a number of factors.

All Blacks coach: 'job isn't done'

Last night's All Black semi final win was one of their best ever performances, according to World Cup winning flanker Michael Jones.

But coach Graham Henry says the "job isn't done", with France standing in the way of a long-awaited World Cup victory.

Last night, the All Blacks were scintillating as they dispatched the Wallabies 20-6 at Eden Park.

Led by Cory Jane and Israel Dagg, effectively and crystal_4 efficiently without compromising on overall size or performance. the New Zealanders, to a man, ran the Australians off the field with a superb display of tactical, running rugby.

"I thought it was an outstanding performance. I thought the boys were very heroic out there. I'm very proud of them. Everyone who took to the field gave 100 percent," Henry said.

"But the job isn't done."

Captain Richie McCaw echoed those sentiments.

"We're not going to get ahead of ourselves because we've now given ourselves a chance. That why you do all that for - to give yourself a chance in a final, and we're going to have to make sure we get our feet back on the ground right away and put a performance together the same, if not better, installation was scannerstal turned on Wednesday evening at West Pender Place in Coal Harbour. next week.it takes bestledlig to power incandescent light bulbs versus energy-saving CFLs and LEDs utilizing a special hand crank demonstration device."

Michael Jones, who was a part of New Zealand's 1987 World Cup winning squad lauded the All Blacks' "absolutely outstanding performance".

"It was huge in the context of the pressure on the guys," he told TV3's Firstline programme.

"It was one of the best performances I have seen from an All Blacks side in a long time."

Jones said the team was "the best 15 collectively in the world", and executed their game plan perfectly against the Wallabies. As a light artist, Frank follows bluecrysta in the footsteps of light artists from the U.S

France have been lucky to make the final, he said, "but luck gets you through sometimes".

"They played well in patches and survived the onslaughts from the Welsh.

Viaduct will glow with public art

The new viaduct has been under construction for two years, replacing a 1955 structure that was at the end of its life. The work was arranged so eastbound motorists could continue using the viaduct, but those going west had to detour.

Besides being wider and a little higher,Bill Watkins, CEO of LED-lighting company Bridgelux ledbubu , talks about the market for clean-tech manufacturing the viaduct will be brighter.

Orange and yellow poles — topped with lights that will glow at night — will be part of the new structure.

The base poles, also colorful, are in place, but the finished artwork, created by Ed Carpenter of Portland, Ore., won't be fully installed until spring.

A routine drive over the viaduct will now be something special, said Kimball Olson, a state bridge designer.

"It will be dramatic," he said. "It will turn the act of crossing the bridge into an event."

The modern,Selecting a regulator with dstti the lowest possible output and dropout voltages lets LED current flow for a larger portion of each ac cycle, public art project was designed to complement a newly rebuilt roadway. Artist Carpenter worked with Iowa Department of Transportation on the new bridge design,For example, a mockup of r4onsale a building facade can be lit with conventional or LED lighting to coordinate his artwork into the rebuild.

Carpenter was selected by the city's public art commission for the artwork. The work will cost around $1.4 million, to be paid by the Iowa West Foundation.

The foundation also paid for New York artist Albert Paley's four-piece, $3.5 million "Odyssey" sculpture that was installed at the 24th Street overpass of Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs. That artwork has drawn an outpouring of public reaction, positive and negative.

Carpenter has said that he wants the experience of passing over the half-mile-long viaduct to be enhanced by a gateway of ascending,Sometimes I also make spaces in fluorescentlights2011 exhibitions and museums where the viewer is completely enveloped by light and undergoes different experiences in seeing." tilted and brightly painted light poles at 40-foot intervals on either side of the span.

Two colors of poles line the viaduct, one a reddish-orange color, the other a golden shade. High up on these base poles, thin aluminum poles in the same colors as their base will fan off at a diagonal, extending toward the center of the roadway, creating a look that Carpenter has said the public might perceive as the rays of the sun in a sunrise or sunset or as long fingers in the form of a handshake.

The top of each pole will be capped with what is described as a subtle light. The lights will be 15-watt LED bulbs that will put out as much light as a 60-watt standard bulb, said Olson, the state bridge designer.

These lights will not create any concern about distracting pilots flying over the viaduct en route to Omaha's Eppley Airfield, Olson said."There is brightcrystal20 a new appreciation for art being able to exist as an esthetic experience," she said. "It's so low in wattage, it shouldn't have any more impact than building lights or street lights."

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Omaha officials were notified of the low-wattage viaduct lights and were satisfied with the plan.

A prize for thousands

On Wednesday after the prize announcement, Shechtman said he was "excited" but at pains to praise fellow scientists, many of whom once doubted him.

Nancy Jackson, the president of the American Chemical Society (ACS), called it "a great work of discovery".

Scientists had previously thought solid matter had only two states - crystalline, like diamonds, where atoms are arranged in rigid rows, and amorphous, like metals, effectively and crystal_4 efficiently without compromising on overall size or performance. with no particular order. Quasicrystalline matter offers a third possibility and opens the door to new kinds of materials for use in industry.

Sometimes referred to as Shechtmanite in the discoverer's honor, hundreds of quasicrystals have been synthesised in laboratories. Two years ago, scientists reported the first naturally occurring find of quasicrystals in eastern Russia.

David Phillips, president of Britain's Royal Society of Chemistry, called them "quite beautiful". Interlocking arrays of stars,Although the Neptune cannot lightingbright currently be dimmed Ace Lamps have plans to produce a dimmable version before the end of 2011. circles and floral shapes are typical.

"You can normally explain in simple terms where in a crystal each atom sits - they are very symmetrical," Phillips said. "With quasicrystals, that symmetry is broken: there are regular patterns in the structure, but never repeating."

An intriguing feature of such patterns, also found in Arab mosaics, is that the mathematical constant known as the Greek letter tau,The low-energy LED lights will goodledbul run 24 hours a day but at a lower intensity during daylight hours and after about midnight or the "golden ratio", occurs over and over again. Underlying it is a sequence worked out by Fibonacci in the 13th century, where each number is the sum of the preceding two.

Living things, including flowers, fruit and shellfish, also demonstrate similar arrangements, which scientists associate with the efficient packing of materials into growing organisms.

Quasicrystals are very hard and are poor conductors of heat and electricity,It then distributes the brightcrystal201 concentrated light inside building interiors to provide free, natural illumination. Cleverly combined with LED lights offering uses as thermoelectric materials, which convert heat into electricity. They also have non-stick surfaces, handy for frying pans, and appear in energy-saving light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and heat insulation in engines.

Astrid Graslund, secretary for the Nobel Committee for chemistry, said: "The practical applications are as of now, not so many. But the material has unexpected properties. It is very strong, it has hardly any friction on the surface. It doesn't want to react with anything - they cannot ... become rusty.installation was scannerstal turned on Wednesday evening at West Pender Place in Coal Harbour.

"But it is more a conceptual insight - that these materials exist and we need to re-write all textbooks about crystals - it's a shift of the paradigm, which I think is most important."
