Global CO2 increase: What should investors do?

Global CO2 increase: What should investors do?
The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has rocketed despite the recession according to the International Energy Authority's latest figures reported here in the Guardian.
The figures show that a record 30.6 giga tonnes of carbon dioxide was added to the atmosphere in 2010 mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. That is a rise of 1.6 giga tonnes from 2009.

Fatih Birol,You want someone that has the experience in LED lighting to guide you to the right product shinebright that is best suited to your project. chief economist of the IEA told the Guardian: "I am very worried. This is the worst news on emissions. The most important step is hiring the right LED lighting experts to help with besttube the retrofit process. It is becoming extremely challenging to remain below 2 degrees. The prospect is getting bleaker. That is what the numbers say."

The news comes despite previous predictions that a recession might have provided some respite from increases in CO2.

For example, the Guardian's leader column is in sombre mood.
"Economically, the optimists argued that the great recession of 2008-09 would give governments and industrialists a vital breathing space. A contracting world economy would naturally reduce carbon emissions; meantime, public and private sectors could strike a green new deal that would begin a shift towards low-carbon growth. Today's figures give the lie to all that: the link between GDP growth and greenhouse gases remains overwhelming."

Later the column continues: "Industrially, the great bet was that rich countries would wean themselves off fossil fuels and on to a mix of nuclear and renewable fuels. Yet Fukushima has prompted Germany, Italy and Switzerland to mothball their nuclear power projects."

So what exactly can individuals and in particular individual investors do about this given that the world's political and business leaders seem to be overwhelmed by the task.
Well according to some reports doing nothing is increasingly not an option even if viewed exclusively in terms of investment returns.

Earlier this year,This is also known as your return on investment ledbright or ROI. It is important to spread the ROI over the life of the LED lamp life to truly see the short and long-term energy and maintenance savings. giant global investment consultancy Mercer published a report, compiled with the help of many of its institutional investment clients, suggesting that climate change could have an adverse effect on portfolios of up to ten per cent of returns in the next two decades.
And in the UK, some fund managers have warned that tough new standards for emissions will have to be factored into calculations of profits and share prices for UK firms. Here Energy Saving News reports how Carbon Footprint's CEO Ralph Pettengell commenting on the matter.

Add drama to landscape with lighting

Add drama to landscape with lighting
Few things are prettier in a night garden than soft pools of light illuminating interesting trees, accent rocks and plants, or pathways. Whether on a small terrace or in a sweeping landscape, lighting creates a welcoming and often dramatic atmosphere.
But in some cases, buried-wire electric lighting can be costly and impracticable. On the other hand there are drivers for r4sale which a car is not just a vehicle or a transportation tool but something much more. The answer might be solar lighting.

The technology of solar lighting has been refined in recent years to include new batteries that take and hold a charge better — typically 1,000 nights per unit. LED bulbs, too, have become more efficient: They can stay outside in any weather, and are available in various watts and colors.

“Most of our clientele prefer LED lighting,” said Justin Wall, owner of Coldwater Landscapes in the Shoals. “It's low voltage (with an) 80,000-hour guarantee. That's like a 15-year warranty.”

Solar lighting is the way to go if the bulbs are in direct sunlight most of the time, Wall said. If your yard is shady,It pays to go to professionals with bestlight a proven track record in LED lighting, a vast selection of excellent quality products from various vendors that live up to their label, and a history of successfully completed projects. however, or even if the weather stays cloudy for a bit, solar may not always be reliable, he said.

Jamie Durie, author and host of HGTV's “The Outdoor Room,The particular demise with the incandescent bulb bluebright continues calmly yet non-stop and in less as compared to any year or two today the sole goods stocked in stores is going to be lower electricity bulbs,” suggests three ways to use solar lighting:

“First, light your perimeter. It gives some perspective and is a creative way to show the boundaries of your property,” Durie said. “Next, mark out your walks and pathways. Lastly, feature trees and other features with up-lighting, or even by attaching solar lights to walls and fences.”

Up-lighting can have a dramatic effect on landscaping, Wall said, especially when illuminating a tree's canopy. But be careful to avoid both “dead” and “hot” spots — places that are either too dark or much too light. Subtlety is key in outdoor lighting, he said.

Durie's not a fan of “clinical” white LEDs, preferring those with amber light. The retrofit process itself can range from a simple count of existing lamps to a brightshine very detailed energy survey, which includes collecting information from your existing lighting, Make sure when buying solar lights that they're all the same tone. And for areas where you want greater intensity, look for lights with more than two and preferably four LEDs in them.

“When they first came out, people didn't like LED (because of its) bluish tint,” Wall said. “But now with new technology, it's not like a blue light anymore — it's a nice, soothing, regular light.”

In his projects, Durie often combines low-voltage electrical lights with solar. Solar lights give a garden a finished look. And once you've purchased the light, the power is as eternal as sunshine.Although police doesn't like it very much but one thing is certain, that your car will certainly stand out from the rest lightonsale vehicles on the road You don't have to make something "hardcore".

Energy Saving Secrets Part 4 of 4: DIY Energy Audit

Energy Saving Secrets Part 4 of 4: DIY Energy Audit
Welcome to the final part in our 4-part series of Energy Saving Secrets. If you’re just now joining us, be sure to check out our previous three entries and browse our other blog articles! In this series,This is also known as your return on investment ledbright or ROI. It is important to spread the ROI over the life of the LED lamp life to truly see the short and long-term energy and maintenance savings. These were some reasons why people are keen to use these lights, hope that they will be used brightstal in a similar way in future as well. we’re examining areas where everyone can benefit from energy savings and apply secrets that aren’t always common knowledge. In this final installment, we’ll show you how to do a home energy audit yourself and pinpoint areas where you can cut down on wasted electricity.

A home energy audit is an exploratory project by which you examine all areas of your home where you could likely be letting energy go to waste. Typically, especially in commercial and industrial environments, a professional energy auditor would take up this task. However, we’re going to offer some tips on how you can reap a substantial savings by doing this crucial task yourself. These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.

Air leaks are a major source of energy waste, and sealing them up could save you up to 35% on your energy consumption each year. First you’ll want to find those obvious drafty leaks and broken seals around the house. Make a list of them,You want someone that has the experience in LED lighting to guide you to the right product shinebright that is best suited to your project. then start checking for indoor leaks, usually found at wall joints, floors, thresholds, junctions, etc. Once you’ve located and listed all the easy-to-find leaks, try to find any more that are harder to detect. Don’t forget about mail slots, ‘doggy doors’ and other such openings. Ensure there are adequate seals around them. Also, if you can see daylight through doors or door frames, they aren’t sealed well enough.

To locate the leaks that are trickier to find, try a pressurization test. Close all your doors, windows and the fireplace flue. Turn off gas stoves, water heaters and other such gas-burning appliances. Turn on the vent fans in the kitchen, bathrooms and anywhere else you have such fans.An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. It also lasts very long, for about 60000 hours which is quite more than other lights. Light a stick of incense and walk around the house with it and watch the smoke as you waft it around door frames, windows, electrical outlets and other common culprits of drafty leaks.

Use caulk and weather stripping to seal all the leaks you found, including indoor and outdoor. Don’t forget wiring panels, outlets, switches, siding, external joints and foundations and similarly often-overlooked areas.

Proper insulation can go a long way to keep your home temperate, and your heating and cooling bills as low as possible. The first place to check is the attic. Open the attic hatch and check to see if it’s insulated. Head up the attic and check to make sure the entire ceiling is insulated as well. If you are paying higher electricity prices than normal, or you have spikes in your electric bill, this is especially important.

Your attic should also have sufficient weather stripping. If you don’t have any sort of vapor barrier in your attic, you might want to paint the ceiling with vapor barrier paint, significantly reducing the amount of water vapor that can permeate through your ceiling.

To check walls for proper insulation, first ensure the electricity in that area of the home is turned off. Carefully pierce the wall with a thin screwdriver and push it through the wall. If you feel a bit of resistance, the wall is most likely insulated. Do a ‘spot check’ in a few other places where a hole in the wall would be discreet. Remember to turn the power off before probing inside the walls. Your wall cavities should be completely filled with insulation. You may want to get in touch with a contractor (or your landlord if you rent your home) if you find no insulation in any of the walls.

U.S. looks to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals

U.S. looks to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals
The United States needs rare earth elements for hybrid cars, light bulbs and Tomahawk cruise missiles, and with only one domestic production plant for the foreseeable future, scientists, academics and lawmakers are worried.

A U.S.The particular demise with the incandescent bulb bluebright continues calmly yet non-stop and in less as compared to any year or two today the sole goods stocked in stores is going to be lower electricity bulbs, House of Representatives subcommittee hearing Tuesday addressed the concern that domestic demand for minerals like rare earth elements far outweighs domestic supply, forcing the United States to depend on China, a nation with its own rising demands for the minerals.

The resources in question are called "critical minerals," which include rare earth elements such as yttrium, neodymium and lanthanum -- used in familiar consumer products and military equipment and weapons -- as well as more commonly known minerals such as copper.

The United States has large supplies of both, and was once the only exporter of rare earths, but because of market pressure, regulatory issues and aging, expensive-to-upgrade equipment, the United States stopped mining rare earth minerals in the last few decades.

Now, the United States relies on China almost exclusively for rare earths. The U.S. Geologic Survey estimated that China produced 130,000 tons of rare earth oxide last year and supplied 92 percent of the U.S. supply of rare earth metals from 2006-09, while France supplied 3 percent and Japan supplied 2 percent.

The U.S. domestic supply comes from one plant.

Molycorp, Inc. has operated under different owners since the 1950s and was once the only producer of rare earth elements in the Western Hemisphere, said lobbyist Andy Davis.

It stopped producing in 2002, Davis said, in part because permits were expiring but also because of China's ability to sell rare earth elements cheaply. Molycorp started mining again in December as interest increased in the resources, "particularly in clean energy" where rare earth elements are used in solar, wind and hybrid vehicle technology, he said. These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.

At Tuesday's House energy subcommittee hearing, scientists, academics and members of Congress agreed that lessening U.S. dependence on China for these materials was of primary importance. The particular demise with the incandescent bulb bluebright continues calmly yet non-stop and in less as compared to any year or two today the sole goods stocked in stores is going to be lower electricity bulbs, Relying on China "is not a sound approach for the country," said U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, D-N.J.

But there was little agreement on how to establish reliable sources for the rare elements.

Robert Jaffe, a theoretical physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who had led a recent study on critical minerals, emphasized a strategy of finding out exactly what critical mineral resources the United States has, researching economical production and use of the elements and recycling products that contain rare earth elements.

Most agreed that the USGS needed to develop a detailed inventory of U.S. and global critical mineral resources. Many people see through their car an easy and comfy way to lightsale go to work, to travel etc. We are talking about transportation and nothing more. Facilities such as a good stereo sound system, climate control and a coffee mug holder are just some things to make driving life easier and much more fun.

A number of the experts and lawmakers endorsed substitution efforts, which replace critical minerals of unreliable supply with easier to find materials, and recycling, in which products like cellphones and iPods can yield minute quantities of rare earth elements.

However, some committee members and witnesses disputed the importance of substitution and recycling compared with finding more sources for the minerals.

Rep.The best way to justify the cost and savings and to brightcrystal truly see how the transition to LED will impact your business is to do a detailed energy audit of existing conditions and compare them to the energy savings and maintenance costs found on the post-LED retrofit report. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., who led the meeting, said he would introduce legislation this week that would direct the U.S. Department of Interior to investigate the country's critical mineral needs and ways of meeting those demands with domestic production.

CNY companies develop a better light bulb

CNY companies develop a better light bulb
The old incandescent light bulbs are on the way out, and a team of companies are jumping in with a new generation of efficient LED lighting.

The LEDs are about as close to natural light as a bulb can produce.print still offers the only truly dstti unlimited 4G plan in America, and it's the only service you can safely use as an alternative to a home Internet connection. They're also more efficient and less expensive over the life of the bulb. It's a technological leap.

"We talked about this next LED going from like the Commodore 64 to the iPad," said John Johnston of ProTerra LED.The brightness of the LED makes sharp led lamp black & white contrasts between the areas in and out of the LED light.

One of the products developed by the team of companies is a model that can replace an existing florescent bulb. It'll last years longer and use 80 percent less energy.

"We're guaranteeing these lights for 5 years," said Ephesus Technology's Joe Casper.

Already, the new LED lighting is being put to use in a Canadian Factory and the bulbs haven't faded at all. Although the initial cost is higher than standard bulbs, the energy savings and reduced need for replacements will save money over the long haul.

The work is all the result of collaboration between three companies, one from Canada,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED salesLight up the architecturally table lamps interesting parts of your home. one from Syracuse.Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb They ran into each other at the Syracuse Technology Garden.

"For us it was just too good to be true and it turned out to be really, really good and really, really true," said Group4 Labs' Felix Ejeckam.

Syracuse will be home base for the effort and handle the research and development of the products. Eventually the manufacturing will also take place here.

"We're going to have to have board manufacturing, we're going to have to have metal extrusions capability, plastics, so we're going to be creating jobs in other market segments to support our products," said Brian Abbe, Vice President of Ephesus.

The lights will be marketed toward more industrial customers to start, but will make their way into homes within a few years. They're already certified and ready for market.

They'll next be installed in six miles of New York City subway.

Phillips Lighting CEO: Super-efficient light bulb

Phillips Lighting CEO: Super-efficient light bulb prices will be cut in half by 2017The cost of light bulbs that use light-emitting diodes (LED), which are much more efficient than typical incandescent light bulbs, could fall by as much as 50 percent by 2017, said Phillips Lighting chief executive Zia Eftekhar.

LED light bulbs haven’t taken off yet because the price tag per LED bulb can be as high as $50.Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales But the latest generation of light bulbs can generate as much light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb using as little as 14 watts of power. Those LED bulb versions will be out sometime next year. That means consumers can save a lot of money over the life of the LED light — but they still have to pay a lot of money upfront,Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb which can cut out casual buyers.print still offers the only truly dstti unlimited 4G plan in America, and it's the only service you can safely use as an alternative to a home Internet connection.
LED lighting is same technology that powers back-lighting for computer screens and televisions — not like the incandescent light bulbs in traditional light sources like lamps and light fixtures. The technology is expensive, but it is much more energy-efficient than traditional light bulbs. Each LED light bulb can last up to 25 times longer than a typical incandescent bulb.

Businesses also stand to save an enormous amount of money because they are more sensitive to the costs of lighting. There are a number of companies that are also working on a “smart” lighting grid that dynamically distributes lighting where it is needed using a combination of electricity usage monitoring and motion detection. Those companies are trying to make lighting behave like a broadband network of sorts — meaning they can be controlled from a central “router” that can monitor electricity usage and turn off lights that aren’t in use.

Phillips is also releasing a 17-watt LED bulb that can generate as much light as a 75-watt bulb. That bulb will again carry a pretty hefty price tag — between $40 and $45 — and will come out sometime in the fourth quarter this year.LED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with better price-performance ratios. Like most other LED bulbs, it will last around 25 times longer than an incandescent light bulb, which means that consumers who pick up the LED light will probably earn back the cost of the bulb in electricity cost and light bulb purchase savings.
Bridgelux, another provider of LED light sources, earlier released an LED-powered light source that cost $20.The brightness of the LED makes sharp led lamp black & white contrasts between the areas in and out of the LED light. That’s still quite a bit higher than traditional incandescent light bulbs, though, which cost anywhere from $2 to $10 per bulb. But it’s indicative of the kind of prices LED lighting can reach.

Energy saving

Energy saving
Alternative energy and energy saving devices – apart from the ubiquitous light bulbs – have struggled to catch the imagination and attention of government and public alike. Energy saving bulbs have,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales in the last few years, largely replaced the old heat-generating and power-hungry bulbs of yore and we all are the better for it. But other energy savers and the development of alternative forms of power generation have lagged behind. It is now being suggested by the chief of the Alternate Energy Development Board that we explore the construction of energy-efficient housing as a way of addressing the massive power deficit we face. Clearly this is not a quick fix, but even though the idea may seem to be a little exotic it has merit,LED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with better price-performance ratios. particularly when part of an integrated policy for alternative power generation and power saving.

Currently most of our power is generated by burning oil,The brightness of the LED makes sharp led lamp black & white contrasts between the areas in and out of the LED light. by far the most expensive form of power generation; and our oil import bill is projected by the Asian Development Bank to rise to $38 billion annually by 2015.Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb Subsidies will come off,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. unit prices are inevitably going to rise and electricity is set to become a luxury many will not be able to afford by 2020 – a mere nine years away. Our gas reserves are depleting rapidly, we have failed to build the dams that would have provided cheap hydroelectricity and against that backdrop a suggestion that we build energy-efficient houses that consume 60-70 percent less power is not so farfetched. We are a low-rise country, living increasingly in cities that are a suburban sprawl rather than a concentration of high-rise blocks — which are considerably more energy-efficient. Roofs can be insulated to cut down interior temperatures; in some areas small roof-mounted windmills can generate sufficient power for fans and lights and everywhere solar panels can work to our advantage. All of this requires vision, investment and political will. A few have the vision – let us hope it can be turned into investment and political will.

American cities on the rebound

American cities on the rebound
Today, worldwide, more than half of us live in cities. By 2050, the United Nations projects nearly three-quarters of us will.

More and more, these bustling metropolises are becoming home.

Connie Curran remembers her years in the suburbs as "dull." She told Doane she started thinking about moving to the city a month after she moved into the 'burbs.Thankfully a new form of led strip energy-efficient light bulbs have arrived that provide this desired feature.

"I bought this house - it had a white picket fence," Curran said. "My sister saw it and she said, 'You're on Wisteria Lane!' It was a great house and it was very peaceful. It was very homogeneous - and it was very boring."

So last year, at age 61, this nurse-turned-healthcare entrepreneur - who found a new lease on life after beating stage-four cancer - settled into a spectacular home in San Francisco.

"When I saw that view I thought, 'Now this is city, and this is a neighborhood. I'm living life. This is life. This is the luxury of middle age."

She defined the luxury of middle-age as the ability "to move to the city and to enjoy the richness and vastness of the things that are here. I hang around 24th Street and usually pick up some flowers, pick up some fruit."

Curran says walking everywhere keeps her fit.

In fact, studies show many urbanites are actually healthier, and may even live longer.

And they're environmentally friendlier, too, because they drive less, live in smaller spaces, and use less energy.

To offset her 3,200-square-foot space,it may become necessary for Cree to look at led bulb purchasing additional LED lighting fixture firs in order to increase their market penetration in this area. Curran takes it a step further: It's all run by solar power. A Lucite stairwell in her three-story modern home lets natural light penetrate, saving so much electricity that the utility company actually writes her a check every month.

While Curran moved to this vibrant city for culture, Harvard economist and author Edward Glaeser says many folks moving to cities are just "following the money," because city workers earn 30% more than those in suburbs.

Just look at midtown Manhattan: "The economic output, the payroll of this area is higher than Oregon or Nevada, right?" Glaeser said. "This tiny sliver of land is an unbelievably productive part of America. And that productivity is ultimately the heart of a city's appeal. It's ultimately what's drawing so many people to cities."

Today, about 250 million Americans choose to live in or around urban areas. That means more than three-quarters of our population shares just about three percent of our land area.

Since 1990, the number of people living in cities has gone up by seven percent - a far cry from all those years of folks fleeing to the suburbs, to places like Long Island, where there was "room to build."

"Today, the movement is in the other direction," said Glaeser. "It's back toward the old ports. It's back towards the densities that were our historic starting point."

In fact, the fastest-growing city in the United States is not New York or San Francisco, it's Olive Branch, Miss.

In the late 1800s,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. the town was known as Cow Pen, said mayor Sam Rikard.

"Do you think changing the name of the town from Cow Pen to Olive Branch might've helped with the growth?" Doane asked.

"I think it's probably helped tremendously, yeah," Rikard said.

Olive Branch - just outside Memphis - has certainly blossomed, from 3,sale of LED for lighting applications.  Semileds is led lights only a minor palyer and should currently not be mentioned in the same breath as the other others500 people in 1990 to a small city of nearly 34,000 today. Citing this 838% population boom, Bloomberg Businessweek recently gave it that ranking: America's fastest-growing city.

"It's almost like that 'Field of Dreams' - you build it and they'll come, you know?" said Rikard. "And that's almost reality here."

It's reality all across the South. Over the last ten years, most of the fastest-growing major cities were Southern cities - and that's not a coincidence, according to Edward Glaeser.

"The variable that best predicts metropolitan growth over the 20th century is January temperature," he said. "Warmth is just a very good predictor of which American cities have grown more quickly or less quickly.

"America in 1900 was built around this great transportation network of the Great Lakes and the railroads. And as it became cheaper to move goods over space, people got to move to the places that they wanted to move to."

Randy and Shannen Taylor moved from a smaller town in Mississippi to Olive Branch back in 2002. They wanted better schools and more amenities, along with an affordable cost of living.

"Just the range of things that have popped up in Olive Branch - restaurants and theater and things like that," said Shannen.

"Has it changed a lot in the last few years?" asked Doane.

"Absolutely," she said. "There used to be just a two-lane road that ran through Olive Branch, and now it's one of the busiest streets in the county."

And that's what gets to life-long resident Janice Turner, who said, "Occasionally I'll ask myself, 'Who are these people coming from?!' And occasionally, 'Didn't they learn to drive?'" she laughed.

Turner says she can measure all this growth by the addition of traffic lights and chain stores: "It looks like an ocean of houses when I get to a high point in Olive Branch and look over the rooftops. And that's sort of startling to see."

"When we think of booming population growth, we might not think of Olive Branch, Miss.," said Doane. "But should we?"

"Sure, we should," said Glaeser. "We should be thinking about so much that's exciting that's happening in the middle of America, that's happening in those areas that are able to combine metropolitan productivity with cost of living."

Cities of all sizes - giving folks like Connie Curran a chance to redefine WHERE they live their American dream.

"I think it just is a way of re-vitalizing and re-energizing, and in a way counting your blessings, really," said Curran.

"And a city can make you do that, feel that?" asked Doane.

"Hey,Because dimmable lights and dimmer fluorescent bulbs switches are so popular amongst American consumers, this drawback has been a significant one. all the way! I think this city does that. City living helps feed your spirit, feed your soul."

Leave school budgets to voters, not Albany

Leave school budgets to voters, not Albany
Who should decide how neighborhood schools are funded?

Should communities in the lower Hudson Valley be able to democratically determine their own educational priorities, or should a one-size-fits-all decree from Albany dictate what parents and others can invest in a student's future?

The answers to these questions are at the heart of why a "hard" tax cap is irresponsible, untenable — and unnecessary. In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly As slick ads from corporate interests and downstate real estate magnates support Albany-dictated controls that favor their interests over those of local communities and our state's children, New Yorkers showed Tuesday they know better. They recognize that, in fact, we already have a democratic process for capping property taxes and, on Tuesday, it worked pretty well.

After all, what else did Westchester, Rockland and Putnam residents do on Tuesday but vote, after careful consideration and debate, on their local property tax rates. In school gyms and cafeterias, community members decided the future direction of their local schools.

Over the previous two months, elected school board members held forums to gather community input and carefully crafted accountable and transparent school budgets that reflected community sentiment.

Say what you will about U2. Name another band that can fill a stadium these days... Time's up. Drawing a blank? That's because there aren't any -- certainly not any from this era. That said, you've got to give it the band its props: Without question, it can still put asses in the seats. Just the same, let's remember: The band has had more than three decades to cultivate its following. That's an eternity by today's standards.

By contrast, openers, the Fray -- who, along with U2's many other descendents, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Muse, Arcade Fire,While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to have improved greatly with recent updates. is the the closest we come to something that passes for iconic these days -- is a bit of a marvel for still standing after two records and nearly a decade in the game. That said, not to take anything away from U2 or those bands, but c'mon, is it really all that noteworthy to be the tallest guy in a room full of short people?

But let's forget about all that for a moment, and talk about the actual tour itself. There's certainly been no shortage of folks, particularly within the U2 camp, willing to pat themselves on the back for the grandiosity of the whole spectacle. And to be clear, it is a spectacle. The towering, ostentatious structure -- which, you can probably see from space, and which takes nearly as long to erect as it took God to speak us into existence -- is truly something to behold, the revolving bridges, the giant LEDs, the dazzling illumination.

But is it truly magnificent, or have we simply become so accustomed to not being dazzled in this new century that all you need to win us over is a few megatons of steel and some flashing lights? Are we are so easily awed that we're oblivious to the fact that what we have here is really a lot of sizzle and not a lot of steak?

As I looked around at the awestruck expressions plastered to the faces of those around me as the band lowered its LED screens, cloaking itself with a mesh of screens that resembled a giant bug zapper during "Zooropa" and the fittingly titled "City of Blinding Lights," I couldn't help but be reminded of that scene from A Bug's Life, in which one winged creature pleads with another: "No! Hurry! No! Don't look at the light!" Inexplicably drawn to the glowing display, his counterpart responds intoxicatingly: "I can't help it. It's so beautiful." That, as you might recall, is immediately followed by the unmistakable sound of his demise, BZZZT!

I will give them this, though: there really wasn't a bad seat in the house. As advertised,In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly the sight lines were mostly unobstructed. The only place in the stadium that might have been less desirable were the seats of those who happened to be seated behind the stage in the South Stands. It's not that you couldn't see. It's just that although Larry Mullen's drum riser rotated, and Bono and the other guys made a concerted effort to journey across the bridges to the outside track that circled the stage, where they played to the various sides of the stadium, for the most part, the outfit played facing the opposite direction.

But I'm just nitpicking here, really; you could lodge such a complaint with that sort of seating arrangement at any show. Most shows block that section off, actually.Philips LED business is inside of Philips lighting so it Led light is more difficult to determine whether they are meeting expectations. There really isn't an effective way to play in the round a full 360° -- well, unless the stage rotated constantly (talk about vertigo.) Fortunately, there was plenty else to distract those folks.

Which brings us to the visuals: Now maybe it's because I still have that epic Roger Waters Wall show at the Pepsi Center from this past November fresh in my memory -- and perhaps that has spoiled me for all subsequent arena rock experiences -- but for all of its pomp and circumstance, I was a bit underwhelmed by U2's much ballyhooed 360° Tour, particularly the visuals, some nods to previous outings.

LED bulbs move in and mix up home lighting

LED bulbs move in and mix up home lighting

In the space of a few years, I've gone from one lighting technology to another and now to three lighting types in my home. I suspect others will be in the same shoes as lighting options expand, notably those involving LEDs.

Eager to cut down my electrical load, I essentially converted to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs) years ago. Recently, though, I've replaced CFLs with efficient LED bulbs and even energy-hogging incandescents to address an unfortunate feature of CLFs: turning them on and off frequently degrades their life.
Home lighting diversifies, led by LEDs (photos)

CLFs are still a good deal both financially and environmentally. They use about one quarter of the energy of incandescent bulbs and will last about 10 years, or 10 times as long, according to Consumer Reports tests. But Consumer Reports also found that turning a CFL on and off within less than 15 minutes, something you might do in the bathroom for instance, leads to earlier-than-expected brownouts.

That rapid cycling issue, plus the arrival of good LEDs in the traditional A19 bulb shape, got me rethinking my home lighting and prodded me to use different bulb types for different purposes. I'm still focused on efficiency, so I'm only using incandescent bulbs in places where the light is used in short spurts. I tend to go in and out of the attic quickly, for example,An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. It also lasts very long, for about 60000 hours which is quite more than other lights. and want full brightness as soon as possible.

I've also added a few LEDs, which are certainly more expensive--a 60-watt incandescent replacement costs almost $40--but functionally they have been good CFL replacements and are more efficient per lumen. I have a few Philips LEDs that give off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent or a 14-watt CFL, and they consume 12 watts.

It will take a long time based on energy savings compared with CFLs to recoup the initial cost. On the other hand, LEDs are supposed to last upward of 20 years, and I placed them in fixtures that we flick on and off frequently, which I hope will address the burnouts I've experienced with CFLs.

LEDs multiply
You don't yet see general-purpose LED bulbs at the supermarket or corner hardware store, but more products in the popular 60-watt-equivalent category are coming, and prices are expected to continue falling. In the space of the last few weeks, a couple of new LED companies have emerged, and one anticipated product (well, anticipated by lighting geeks at least) is expected in stores soon.
Light dispersal in LED bulbs (photos)

Switch Lighting, backed by venture capital firm VantagePoint Capital Partners, plans in the fourth quarter to start selling an LED bulb which has a cooling system that it says will ensure long life--on the order of 20,000 hours, or 18 years, at three hours a day. The company is readying 40-watt, 60-watt, and 75-watt equivalent bulbs, with prices starting at less than $20, according to a representative. To make light dispersal more even, the LED light sources--small coin-size dots--are located near the edge of the bulb glass, a change from the typical "snowcone" shape.

Another company is Pixi Lighting, which introduced an A19 LED earlier this month. It has a color rendering index (CRI) of 90, a measure of light quality, and a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, or white light. The 40-watt equivalent, which uses 6.5 watts, has been in an overhead fixture in my house for a few weeks and I find the light quality is good.

Lighting Sciences Group will offer two 60-watt equivalent LEDs with some impressive "feeds and speeds" slated to be available online and in Home Depot nationally by the end of the second quarter, according to the company. Rather than the snowcone shape, the bulb has a thick disk on top of a heat sink to disperse light evenly.

There will be both a "cool white" and "warm white" version. The most important step is hiring the right LED lighting experts to help with besttube the retrofit process. The cool white will give off 950 lumens, have a CRI of 88, consume 13 watts, and have a cool color temperature of 4,900 Kelvin. That product is already available at some Home Depot stores and costs $36.97. The warm white will give off 850 lumens,The retrofit process itself can range from a simple count of existing lamps to a brightshine very detailed energy survey, which includes collecting information from your existing lighting, consume 13 watts, have a CRI of 88,An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. It also lasts very long, for about 60000 hours which is quite more than other lights. a temperature of 3,000 Kelvin,The most important step is hiring the right LED lighting experts to help with besttube the retrofit process. and cost $34.97.

The design of that product reflects how manufacturers are trying to improve LEDs so that they are suitable for many more uses in a typical home. Until now, LEDs have excelled at directional lighting uses, such as spotlights or downlights in recessed cans in a ceiling. But now GE has an "omnidirectional" LED bulb where the heat sink diffuses light. Cree, too, is working on a 60-watt replacement LED bulb that prioritizes even light along with efficiency (less than 10 watts) and life.

Costly light and government overreach

Costly light and government overreach
Notice how expensive light’s going to be getting, I point out in Thursday morning’s Journal Sentinel: Bulb makers say they’re close to perfecting the LED bulb for household use that can replace the 100-watt incandescent bulb, which is more or less illegal as of next year. The LED bulb would cost, at least at the outset, about $50.

In what world does a $50 light bulb for household use make sense? One where the government makes the cheaper alternatives scarce. Congress knocked out 50-cent incandescent bulbs as part of a 311-page law passed in Nancy Pelosi’s first bloom of power and signed – gee, thanks, pal – by President George W. Bush. The ban* approaches unhindered under President Barack Obama and, as I point out, fits right into his plans to nudge us into a “green jobs” utopia. It’s of a piece with Obama’s cap-and-trade-and-Chevy-Volt dreams.

I write:

“In selling all these things, the president speaks of villains who at last will be made to pay: Coal-burning utilities will squirm, oil companies will be discomfited. In place of these baddies, virtuous new industries will be spawned.

“But he makes an elementary error: He sees the $50-per-bulb of revenue to a new lighting industry while never noticing the $49.50 of other things that people would have bought had their government not ginned up a light-bulb crisis. You want someone that has the experience in LED lighting to guide you to the right product shinebright that is best suited to your project. The $50 isn't new money: It's just diverted against customers' will from, say, mustard or dentistry or shoes or motel stays or any of a million things that people would rather spend their money on if the government had let well enough alone.

“Underlying all this is, apparently, a belief that you and I have to get used to less of nearly everything, energy included,These are also used as art light as well, it is because crystal these lights did not emit any harmful rays and the bluish color of LED lights makes a painting look very different from others and makes them attractive for the viewers. and that it's up to policy-makers to nudge us. Take another part of (Rep. Paul) Ryan's plans, health care for future retirees. He proposes a reliable, tested mechanism to bring prices down - market economics. Obama instead proceeds from the belief that we're using too much health care. He proposes an expert panel that will restrict how much care people get, especially of expensive, new treatments. These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.

“On taxes, Obama talks endlessly of more accurately finding out who has too much money - again with the villains! - and taxing away more of it. Ryan audaciously suggests we see how we can all get richer, meaning more money for every purpose - including government, and without the punitive rates. These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.”

Read about a more optimistic alternative here.

*By the way, I know that formally speaking, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 does not ban incandescent bulbs. No, it just insists that any bulb you are permitted to buy should be many times as efficient as incandescent bulbs can be. Clever.

Also, yes, I know compact fluorescents are somewhat cheaper than LEDs. Yes, I know they save money long-term, presuming the kids don’t break them. That’s why I use several around my house, in places where I don’t care that their light is weak and ugly.It pays to go to professionals with bestlight a proven track record in LED lighting, a vast selection of excellent quality products from various vendors that live up to their label, and a history of successfully completed projects. That doesn’t make it right for the government to boss around your light bulb selection.

Banning light bulbs not such a bright idea

Banning light bulbs not such a bright idea
"Ban the Bomb" in the '60s will become "Ban the Bulb" in 2012. The 100-watt incandescent light bulb will vanish from store shelves nationwide on Dec. 31.

Thomas Edison's miracle will join the list of verboten products - products deemed so dangerous they're banned by federal law.

Move over crystal meth,The best way to justify the cost and savings and to brightcrystal truly see how the transition to LED will impact your business is to do a detailed energy audit of existing conditions and compare them to the energy savings and maintenance costs found on the post-LED retrofit report. child pornography and DDT, here comes the 100-watt!

Once again California led the way. But this bright idea quietly jumped the leash and made it all the way to Washington where it became the law of the land courtesy of our former dim bulb president who signed it. Maybe George W. couldn't see what he was signing?

Butter-churns, doilies, harpsichords and tube radios have all been enshrined in the Museum of Obsolescence. But unlike these antique technologies, the incandescent bulb is being replaced by an inferior technology; a flop in the free market that requires the coercive power of the law to thrive.

A better mousetrap has to actually be better.

Last Saturday I used the big ladder to reach a blown bulb way up in the ceiling. You want someone that has the experience in LED lighting to guide you to the right product shinebright that is best suited to your project. I had never changed that bulb, not in the 7 years I've owned my house. It was a 200-watt beauty that lit up the room like the Rose Bowl.

That got me thinking.

If a 100-watt bulb is a crime, a 200-watt bulb could get me the electric

chair. Or maybe someone will invent a solar chair, which would give a whole new meaning to "going green. It pays to go to professionals with bestlight a proven track record in LED lighting, a vast selection of excellent quality products from various vendors that live up to their label, and a history of successfully completed projects."

First we were told to use those dim, squiggly, compact fluorescent bulbs. It turns out they emit mercury vapor when you break one and leak contaminants if not disposed of as toxic waste. So the fluorescent bubble has burst.

Ready for the next bright idea?

At last weeks' "LightFair" trade show in Philadelphia two manufactures rolled out their new LED bulbs. They claim they're as bright as a traditional 100-watt incandescent and they only cost $50 bucks. Each.

Ouch.

In addition to the staggering price, incandescent light bulbs will be completely phased out and scannerstal no longer available to consumers within the next three years, it's time to start thinking about how you will illuminate your homes and workplaces. LEDs also produce heat that shortens their lifespan. So for $100 bucks you can get a two-pack of bulbs that may or may not be as bright as what you can get now for $5, and they won't last as long either. What's next, a square wheel?

The wife and I are converting the wine cellar into a bulb bunker. When the Light Bulb Police show up at my place they better be ready. The best way to justify the cost and savings and to brightcrystal truly see how the transition to LED will impact your business is to do a detailed energy audit of existing conditions and compare them to the energy savings and maintenance costs found on the post-LED retrofit report. I've got my trusty bow and arrow within easy reach and the wife is pretty handy with a blunderbuss.

The State of Green Furnishings

The State of Green Furnishings
A chair could change a century and perhaps a planet. Sadly, while Tokyo burns, the home-furnishings industry’s green-innovations seem to hover around the hopeful,Under efforts of led spotlight boosting the viability of LED luminaires, many companies are expanding high-power selections. yet in seeming limbo, out-of-touch with the times, though some small visionaries are exploring one or two singular aspects of sustainability.

Asked for an honest assessment of the “State of Green and Sustainability” at New York trade show, ICFF,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), we traipsed through three very-cool satellite showrooms, one high-end showroom, and the whole ICFF show floor (at the Javits Center) before we finally heard smart talk from a visionary manufacturer. Someone is doing their homework and we loved hearing words like “biocide release,Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb change of custody in the supply chain and resource conservation.” Our midterm grade for all the other designers who should get to their green homework: a sad C. Herewith is our first Report Card and highlights of the green and sustainable trends from ICFF 2011.

Sad Grade “C” Comments: We do know salacious sells, (and thankfully also raises consciousness).Light up the architecturally table lamps interesting parts of your home. While we did see exciting trends with aspects of green consciousness, we saw less innovation than we hoped for. The prize for the most astonishing comments heard go to two shall-be-unnamed manufacturers, one a widely-acclaimed earth-oriented and “conscious business” and the other a major industrial player. When asked about the sustainability of its materials, the too-casual representative of the well-known, designer-driven brand touted for its sensitivity for the environment and zen-like consciousness of living in balance said, “Well, with the teak, we try, sometimes the source is unknown and with the horn bowl, we have no idea what animal it comes from, I think it’s a by-product.” His booth companion rep looked bored with the whole discourse, while he promised to get a better answer. (I’m waiting for it to appear in my email box.)

Less surprising, but still deeply disturbing, was the self-assured comment from one of America’s leading industrials on the material source of their plastic light fixtures. “Well, it’s a plastic that’s been used for years so that means it’s safe.” I guess she never heard of asbestos or skipped the training on MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for which her company is famous for,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales opting instead for a AMPS, (A Mani-Pedi Session; for those who haven’t heard this expression before, it refers to a partially-sexist comment, “she was getting a manicure/pedicure when she should have been doing her homework”).

On a more promising and happier note, we are delighted to report on trends and highlights seen on the show floor and at Noho and Soho showroom openings.

Joinery is hot. No glue! No nails! The use is the structure!: We noticed designers everywhere by-passing the by-products of labor and materials and the less-sustainability of glue, nail or screw joinery to ingeniously craft designs which fit together naturally. From the rubber band holder by Craighton Bernman, whose changing design is also its function, seen at the “Use Me” show, the 6th produced by the American Design Club featuring 45 young American designers of “unapologetically functional objects,” to Oscar Magnus Narud’s Keel series of very macho feeling metal wedged-into-wood stools and and furningshings, (the exhibit is called “’Make Me’/ Butch Craft”) at the legendary Soho design lab Moss, and finally to Tom Dixon, who does Ikea with style plus stools at ICFF, the satisfying feeling of effortless joining is a new green trend. And it is older than time. We like the phrase “joinery as ornament” from Thos. Moser, a traditional manufacturer where the dovetail has been an everyday basic for centuries.

New Chip-on-Board LED Lighting Solutions from Everlight

New Chip-on-Board LED Lighting Solutions from Everlight
presents a new Chip-on-Board (COB) LED series to offer a solution to address important issues in general lighting replacement applications. Competing to previously dominating standard discrete low power, mid power, and high power LED components,Light up the architecturally table lamps interesting parts of your home. Chip-on-Board LEDs are predicted to take on a third of all LED A-lamp applications in 2011.

To replace 40W and 60W incandescent A-bulbs, LED A-lamps need a light source that exhibits high efficiency, sufficient lumen output, high CRI, color uniformity, and sufficient light distribution to maintain a comfortable and uniform lighting environment – all at consumer acceptable prices. With its new COB Series,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales Everlight Electronics has created an ideal LED to address major challenges posed when designing an LED A-bulb: heat dissipation, color shift over time and temperature, light distribution and cost.

Everlight’s COB LED series is a MCPCB substrate based multi-chip solution that boasts a >95lm/W at 3000K CCT and >80 CRI. Less layers of thermal resistance result in lower overall junction temperature.Under efforts of led spotlight boosting the viability of LED luminaires, many companies are expanding high-power selections. A new patent pending Everlight innovation is able to address the Hot/Cold Factor,Unlike compact cfl bulbs fluorescent light bulbs, LED based light bulbs provide a variety of lighting options- including the ability to provide a wide range of light, which allows them to act as a proper replacement light bulb the color uniformity as related to change in temperature. From 25°C to 85°C, the Everlight COB LED can control CCT shift to within 200K CCT for all wattages
- the first of its kind that is able to restrict the shift to such a narrow range. A large single light emitting source means less diffusion needed to achieve high uniformity and light distribution. And finally, due to high performance, aggressive commercial strategy, and less processes and material required for assembly,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. the Everlight chip-on-board technology has nearly achieved the industry target of 200lm/$ for LED light sources.

Everlight is fostering closer working relationships between our R&D, Sales and Marketing teams to meet and exceed our customer’s expectations in both product offering and technology. The COB LED Series is expected to satisfy the fast-growing market of general lighting LED replacement applications.
