While it was clear to everyone that the left had been on its way out and was fighting for its life, few thought that the scale of its debacle — or the victory of Mamata's Trinamool Congress — would be so overwhelming. While it's understandable that people badly wanted a change after three decade of the left rule, the fall of the Marxists was hastened by the swift erosion of its support base of the poor and lower middle class sections of society, especially the desperately backward Muslim community. Indeed, the condition of Bengal Muslims is worse than those in Narendra Modi's Gujarat, according to government statistics.
