Al, a Centerville native, spent 20 years in the Navy before sustaining a combat-related injury that forced him into early retirement. Shortly after, Christy became disabled in a car accident and could no longer work either
"I had a really bad fall and went through 53 surgeries," Kroell said. "When I retired, my wife also got badly injured in a near-fatal car accident and became disabled as well."
The Kroells had no choice but to move out of their home on base near San Diego. They packed up and moved to Squaw Valley – close enough to Al's hometown, but far enough from city living that they could focus on rest and recuperation.
As the credit card bills stacked up, Christy and Al found solace in something that brought them joy: making custom laser engraved plaques for military service members. Al said he started making plaques over 30 years ago when he was in the military as a way to honor service men and women departing military bases. He used an engraving machine to produce custom plaques from wood, metal and glass.
It didn't occur to the Kroells that they could make a living doing it, until they caught wind of Reedley College's entrepreneurship program two years ago. They each took a few business classes, and Al joined the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Club. He was inspired.

The detail and vibrancy in the landscapes and aliens are a touch above other games on the market. Minos is blasting turrets, aircraft and other flying aliens as points tally up on the HUD, without the stutter that you might find in less remarkable action games. Also the HUD reports a healthy lineup of information (such as health, shield, points, time remaining and level completion status) without ever feeling too cluttered.
What really makes this game an instant win is the inspired diversity in each level. After getting my Space Harrier on, I landed on my first building and was attacked by alien hounds. I quickly gave them a few uppercuts and roundhouse kicks with Minos. A robot that also gets down with a little MMA, how cool is that? There is one caveat. You will have get used to the Virtual Pad the first few times the game switches over to it from the gyro controls, primarily for land battles. The left and right movements can feel a little awkward and restricted at times. I still enjoyed doing my robo-kicks, but the game lost some of the fast pacing of the flying sections.
Minos also operates a motorcycle, which is downright awesome for a robot. Once again, you’re using the Virtual Pad. However, the pace picks up during these moments as you drift into enemies to knock them down. Unfortunately the rakish roofline tends to scrape the heads of taller riders entering and exiting the car.
Unlike the land yachts of old, the XTS isn’t packing eight cylinders, but rather a direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces a willing 304 horsepower. It’s neither the smoothest nor the fastest engine in the luxury segment, but it gets the job done nicely and with respectable fuel economy at 17/28 mpg. Still, a turbocharged six would add some extra oomph here. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.
As one would hope and expect from the largest Cadillac sedan, the XTS rides smoothly, absorbing even the most punishing potholes and pavement irregularities like a sponge, while handling surprisingly well for such a large car, or at least one that isn’t branded “BMW.” This is thanks to a sophisticated front suspension that virtually eliminates torque steer (the tendency of a front-drive car to pull to one side under heavy acceleration) with Magnetic Ride Control that adjusts the stiffness of the shock absorbers instantaneously according to the driving situation and road surface. The XTS’ spacious cabin can accommodate five adult riders in comfort with generous leg, shoulder and hip room. The leather-trimmed dashboard features attractive accent stitching and subtle LED accent lighting. Large and legible configurable electronic gauges can be augmented by an optional heads-up display that projects vehicle speed and other information onto the windshield in the driver’s line of sight.
The automaker’s CUE (for Cadillac User Experience) multimedia control system is standard and uses a large display that responds to both touches and gestures, along with clumsy “touchpoints” on the dashboard instead of buttons and knobs. While it provides some tactile feedback when executing operations, we found CUE to be difficult – and distracting – to operate while driving.
