DON'T ASK how I managed to live in this country for six decades without visiting the Grand Canyon, but my wife put things right as a surprise gift for one of those birthdays ending in a zero. I'm 30 again, or more accurately, 12 for a fifth time.
We flew from Detroit to Las Vegas, where we rented a car for the drive to the Grand Canyon. It's a five-hour trip, or the equivalent of traveling
from Port Huron to Cincinnati, but with less traffic and more mountains.
A memorable moment occurred in Williams, Ariz., where we left Interstate 40 and decided to top off the tank. Gas sold for $4.08 a gallon, or 30 cents more than the price advertised a few miles up the road on Highway 64. We'll always remember Williams as That Place Where We Got Gouged, which is more or less the reputation Port Huron is earning with travelers.
The journey's final 50 miles covered relatively flat and featureless terrain, with little to suggest we were approaching anything wow-wowesque.

I found myself thinking of folks who stumbled upon the canyon by accident -- Native American hunters, Spanish soldiers, American trappers, Mormon missionaries -- and the astonishment they must have felt.

WE SHARED their awe with our first glimpse of the canyon. No book or documentary quite prepares you for the pastel colors of the cliffs, the towers and turrets of the rock formations or the evanescent quality of the light.
And then there is the sheer scale of it all, a place where enormity becomes normality.

By good fortune, we timed our visit to ideal weather -- cool but not uncomfortable with sunshine, blue skies and clear air. The park bustled with activity without feeling oppressively crowded.
The Grand Canyon is a national treasure, but it belongs to the world as well. On Tuesday morning, I departed at dawn for South Kaibab Trail and a hike into the canyon -- and into time.
The elevation of the trailhead is 7,260 feet above sea level; the Colorado is nearly 4,800 feet lower. From rim to river, the trail covers about seven miles, and with every few footsteps of descent, the rock gets another million years older.
The walk back up is seven miles, too, which is why I stopped at Cedar Ridge, 1,200 feet and maybe 400 million years below the rim.
WE TOOK the long way back to Vegas, traveling east into the Navajo Nation, which encompasses an area larger than 10 states, and then into the Arizona Strip, a sparsely inhabited region north of the Grand Canyon.
At Lee's Ferry, near the base of the 3,000-foot-high Vermilion Cliffs, we finally got a close look at the emerald waters of the Colorado. The original Navajo Bridge, which parallels a new span, is used as a pedestrian walkway.
