Jim Bacon of Helping Hand Landscaping of Midland said solar lights are an affordable option.

"The technology is better now than when they first came on the market," Bacon said. "I have a set in my yard I bought for $1.99 a piece that are very bright and last about nine hours between sun charges."

Bacon offers a variety of landscaping services including installing lighting schemes. He said the choices are almost endless.

"It depends on what they want ... some lights are made with copper or brass finish, Bacon said. "These go for $5 to $10 a piece. Some low voltage lights are expensive, but once you get the transformer box you can add several lights to the system. Most boxes handle halogen or LED lights."

Bacon also explained that fiber optic lighting is gaining in popularity now especially with ponds and waterfalls.

"Basically you can get a solar light for $2 or a state of the art low voltage LED system for a few hundred dollars," he said. "Solar lights absorb light during the day and at night they come on. During the winter they only last part way through the night because there is less daylight and more dark time."
