Metro hopes to open El Monte bus station in October

After pushing the completion date back earlier this year, officials hope to open the new El Monte bus station by October, although a firm date has not yet been set.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) representatives delayed a May completion date to late August because of a difficult excavation process due to a significant amount of construction debris discovered beneath the old transit center.

Bus riders still using the current temporary terminal will have to wait a little longer as the Metro works to put the finishing touches on the facility, which is about 95 percent complete, said Metro Director of Capital Projects Tim Lindholm said Friday.

"We are a little bit behind," Lindholm said. "It's really a combination of factors, but really the goal is to make sure everything is functioning correctly."

Workers are finishing the site's landscaping, inspecting elevators and escalators, installing carpet and signs and ensuring that ventilation system, solar panels and the lighting are all working properly, Lindholm said. The consumer market has not been quick to take up ceilinglamp,

After that is completed, training for bus operators will begin before the new station can open, he said.

The work began in September 2010 with the demolition of the former El Monte Station building, which served 22,000 passengers a day from 16 bus bays. Since then, the station's users have been serviced out of a temporary terminal on the site, at Santa Anita Avenue and Ramona Boulevard. That terminal will later this year be converted back into a parking lot, officials said.LED modules and module strings for solarstreetlight.

Bus riders said they were eager for the project to be completed.

"On hot days like this I'm looking for air conditioning," said Robert Addison, 55, as he sat under the shade of a tree near the temporary terminal. "And during bad weather, this tree won't be much protection from the rain."

There are several small canopies at the temporary terminal, but many of them were full as riders waited for their buses.

"I haven't been here for three to four months and it's really nice," Rick Hernandez of West Covina said as he looked over to the new building.
