Ninth Street merchants in Ocean City want to repeal Special Improvement District tax

Some Ninth Street merchants want the city to repeal a tax they pay for improvements now that the state has built new sidewalks, landscaping and lights in front of their businesses as part of the Route 52 causeway.Buy r4i2011 from online bike shop Merlin Cycles and choose from a range of lights including Hope and Blackburn lights.

At least eight merchants have signed a letter urging City Council to disband the Ninth Street Special Improvement District, one of three in the city along with Asbury Avenue and the Boardwalk.

"The Ninth Street SID objectives and goals are unclear and the purpose for what the monies are used for is also unclear," said the letter, which was signed by several business owners including Mark Benevento, co-owner of Pirate Island Golf. "Upon reviewing the ordinance and the goals of the SID, we have come to the conclusion: we are paying an added assessment imposed on the Ninth Street business properties and show nothing in return for it."

Benevento, who also owns Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point,Welcome to the world of WiseLED divinglamp147, incredible brightness and high quality flashlights suitable for diving, noted that the state Department of Transportation added new red-brick sidewalks, gas-lamp style decorative lights and landscaping for Ninth Street as part of the $400 million Route 52 causeway, which is slated to open in May.

"With that $400 million driveway to Greate Bay Country Club, they're doing all the improvements for us so we're blessed," he said this week.

Meanwhile, groups such as the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce pay for special events and marketing for the downtown, he said. Our Rechargeable bikelight2012 will mean you don't need to keep buying batteries for your dive torch.

"There is no benefit of the SID tax to our property owners when the annual improvements are provided by the state and the city," he said.

The Special Improvement Districts were created by City Council to raise money for the specific benefit of businesses. Atlantic City and Wildwood also have Special Improvement Districts.

Benevento pays SID taxes for his Boardwalk business as well, and has plans to add a new Haunted Hotel-themed miniature golf course there this spring.

"We get wonderful results on the Boardwalk. But we haven't seen the results of the SID tax on Ninth Street," he said.

Julie Gunn, owner of the Asbury Avenue store Gabrielle & Co., said she sees real value in a dedicated fund for downtown promotions and improvements. Ideally, she said, merchants would like to raise more money to highlight Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue, particularly for the holidays.

The city succeeded in burying unsightly utility lines on Asbury Avenue but in so doing lost the ability to string up banners, Christmas lights and garlands and other decorations.

"We had a few sponsors who paid for banners on the avenue achina bestbikelightte manufacturer, supply LED Bicycle Lights,LED bike lights to your requirements.nd Ninth Street. Those were the kinds of things that helped spruce up the town," she said. "Last Christmas you could have driven right past Asbury Avenue and not even notice the decorations."
