In 'Arists of Light' iLuminate dancers light up stage

Miral Kotb was practically born dancing. She's also been writing computer software since she was 9 years old. For all intents and purposes, her two passions might have remained separate: Kotb had a job as a developer at Bloomberg and was thinking about quitting to pursue a professional dance career. But then a life-threatening battle with a malignant tumor changed all of that – for the better.

Following treatment and eventually the remission of her rare malignancy, Kotb gave herself the green-light to combine those passions to develop iLuminate, a concept that combines wireless technology with contemporary dance to create unique performances in the dark.

"It was time to do both things that I love and follow the dreams I'd always had," Kotb said.

Today, the iLuminate company is a favorite among choreographers and performers like the Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown and David Guetta. In the form of Team iLuminate, it was also selected as a finalist on NBC's "America's Got Talent" competition earlier this year.

It's easy to see why everyone is clamoring to get a piece of iLuminate, in which body suits are hooked up with LED lights and controlled by an iPhone or lighting console to create a movable engaging light show.

With the help of a playwright and fellow developers, Kotb expanded the capabilities of iLuminate technology even more to create a one-of-a-kind, off-Broadway live show called "Artists of Light," which premieres Friday at The Duke theater in Manhattan.

Kotb said that this play is unlike anything the company has ever done. The length and space of the show allows audience members to immerse themselves in the experience.

"It's almost cartoon-like," Kotb said. "There's an opportunity to show the technology at its best,Ideas on bringing out the beauty of your outdoors that will showcase it's unique charm through brightstal techniques. and the illusions are that much more elevated."

Kotb also made sure to include her eclectic musical taste in the dances of "Artists of Light."

"There's a lot of contemporary dancing, some hip-hop, break-dancing, flamenco and tango," she said. "We want people to constantly be surprised."

The combination of lights, dances and music aims to create a fluidity that audiences will appreciate. "All age groups can appreciate it," Kotb said. "Not because of the genre, but because of the technology and the art."
