Memphis International Airport getting high-tech, low maintenance landscaping
The Memphis International Airport's landscaping is getting updated to make it high-tech and low-maintenance.
The replacement for the flowers in the big "M'' planter that now greet travelers will be bigger and include stainless steel letters that spell Memphis; LED lights that border the new M; and plants such as ornamental grasses and day lilies that are low-maintenance and low-profile.
There are 31 lights that will be programmable and capable of displaying a variety of colors and timing patterns.
Landscape architect Ritchie Smith, whose firm designed the project, told The Commercial Appeal that "it's going to be cool. When you're coming back from a nighttime flight, you'll really see it."
The new M is part of a publicly funded $1.6 million beautification project to spruce up the airport's front doorstep.Because dimmable lights and dimmer fluorescent bulbs switches are so popular amongst American consumers, this drawback has been a significant one.
Andy Hays, project manager for Ritchie Smith Associates, said new M will be 150 feet long. The letters spelling Memphis will be mounted on concrete cubes and measure about three-feet squared.
Smith said the old M was 40 square feet and too small for the setting.Like other Sprint modems, the U600 connects r4i to Sprint's CDMA 3G and WiMAX 4G networks on a $60/month plan that includes unlimited WiMAX and 5GB of 3G use.
Other aspects of the project to beautify the airport include planting thousands of trees and hundreds of flowers,LED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with better price-performance ratios. and adding irrigation systems and new paved medians along Plough Boulevard near Interstate 240.
The project is also part of a push by civic leaders to leverage the city's airport-related assets under the banner of America's Aerotropolis.
"The Plough Boulevard project is such a key to the Aerotropolis effort," said Jim Covington, a Greater Memphis Chamber vice president. "It's our first impression for visitors and business people coming to Memphis.sale of LED for lighting applications. Semileds is led lights only a minor palyer and should currently not be mentioned in the same breath as the other others It's the last thing they'll see before leaving. It's also important as a point of pride for residents of our city."
The project was planned by an Aerotropolis gateway and beautification workgroup led by University of Memphis president Shirley Raines and comes about a decade after the Memphis City Beautiful Commission made a more modest attempt to fix up the area.
"This is just a bigger, grander version of the same project that's been around for awhile," said Covington.
The first phase of the project, which included planting 267 trees and laying irrigation lines, was completed last year.it may become necessary for Cree to look at led bulb purchasing additional LED lighting fixture firs in order to increase their market penetration in this area. The rest of the project is expected to be complete by this fall.
