Streetlights to be replaced with solar-powered LED lamps
The Chennai Corporation will soon replace 2,795 streetlights in slums in its nine zones with solar-powered LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps.

“We have conducted trials. Three years ago, we installed 70 such [LED] lights and they are working well. In 15-20 days, the project will be inaugurated.These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. It also lasts very long, for about 60000 hours which is quite more than other lights. We would be installing such solar-powered LED lamps in parks too,” the Mayor said, adding that an announcement regarding the project was made in the 2011-12 budget.
A total of 35 resolutions, including one pertaining to installation of lights, acoustics and fire-fighting equipment at the upcoming auditorium in Shenoy Nagar, another concerning the proposed sound-and-light show at Victoria Public Hall at a cost of Rs.3.26 crore, and to demolish a few old structures of the civic body, were passed at the meeting.
Opposition Leader Saidai P. Ravi said that the services of Neel Metal Fanalca, the agency handing waste management in four zones, were not up to the desired level in many areas.
When resolutions 29 and 30 on transfer of revolving funds to self-help groups formed under the Swarna Jayanthi Sahari Rojgar Yojana were taken up for discussion, Councillor of ward 16, S.Meena alleged that over Rs.1 crore was transferred to the accounts of 700-odd groups in March after the model code of conduct came into force.
She also said “the list of Below Poverty Line persons was finalised at random. The scheme does not have a proper project officer.”
Commissioner D.Karthikeyan said that if a formal complaint was made, the civic body would order a thorough investigation into the matter.It pays to go to professionals with bestlight a proven track record in LED lighting, a vast selection of excellent quality products from various vendors that live up to their label, and a history of successfully completed projects.
Permission turned down
Earlier, members belonging to the CPI and CPI (M) requested the Mayor to allow a resolution greeting the new government in the State.
