The Chennai Corporation will soon replace 2,795 streetlights in slums in its nine zones with solar-powered LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps.

A total of 35 resolutions, including one pertaining to installation of lights, acoustics and fire-fighting equipment at the upcoming auditorium in Shenoy Nagar, another concerning the proposed sound-and-light show at Victoria Public Hall at a cost of Rs.3.26 crore, and to demolish a few old structures of the civic body, were passed at the meeting.

Opposition Leader Saidai P. Ravi said that the services of Neel Metal Fanalca, the agency handing waste management in four zones, were not up to the desired level in many areas.

When resolutions 29 and 30 on transfer of revolving funds to self-help groups formed under the Swarna Jayanthi Sahari Rojgar Yojana were taken up for discussion, Councillor of ward 16, S.Meena alleged that over Rs.1 crore was transferred to the accounts of 700-odd groups in March after the model code of conduct came into force.

She also said “the list of Below Poverty Line persons was finalised at random. The scheme does not have a proper project officer.”

Permission turned down

Earlier, members belonging to the CPI and CPI (M) requested the Mayor to allow a resolution greeting the new government in the State.

Mr.Subramanian said that the resolution had been placed for inclusion just two days before the meeting. “Technically eight days are necessary for any resolution to be placed before the Council,” he said, while refusing to allow the resolution.
