WE all agree that pickup trucks are inherently designed to be a basic workhorse. They’re tough, reliable, powerful and built for those who want to play in muddy ruts on weekends. No doubt, they belong to the outback. But nowadays we’ve seen that technology makes drastic and radical improvements—much like a man’s transition from a testosterone-driven teen to a refined gentleman.

A good example is the Nissan Navara. After sitting on the sidelines of the pickup craze for years, Universal Motors Corp. (UMC)—the exclusive distributor of Nissan light commercial vehicles in the country—is now ramping up its offerings with its newest Navara TechXtreme series.

To be honest, when I first saw the Navara TechXtreme series, I was not that excited. So, it’s still the same Navara pickup truck. No big deal. But after several moments, I realized that I made a hasty and flawed judgment. The aluminum accents for center lid cluster, center console and door switch caught my attention with its cutting-edge design that adds a sense of class and sporty feel inside the cabin. Though it looks tough outside, the Navara pampers both driver and passengers alike with SUV-like comforts. The audio system of the Navara features 2-DIN tuner/DVD/CD/MP3 with USB port, SD card slot, Bluetooth, AUX, iPod connection and built-in memory storage for six discs.

Another good enhancement is the entertainment system with dual headrest-mounted monitors as a standard feature—the first of its kind in the pickup segment.lightingbright The multi-screen entertainment system with three LCD monitors allows viewing convenience everywhere in the vehicle. The LCD system at the center performs multiple duties such as an integrated GPS navigational device,dstti2011 a touchscreen interface and an output monitor for the rear-view camera.

There’s a lot to make you smile when you climb inside the Navara TechXtreme series. The interior of the Nissan Navara was designed to create an atmosphere of comfort and luxury not always found in pickup trucks. There is a multi-LED bulb for its map lamps and room lamp giving better illumination for a more radiant ambiance inside when driving at night. The seats are constructed to support the driver and passengers particularly when driving sideways at high angles. With significant improvement in legroom and headroom, riding a pickup truck will never be as comfortable as Navara.

The Nissan Navara TechXtreme series has its own special features. One that I like the most is the Wi-Fi connectivity.bicyclelight All you need to do is to plug your broadband stick to allow access on the Internet. That thing blew my mind away!

Design-wise, the body of the Navara is sleek and definitely aggressive in nature. The Navara TechXtreme series is a standout truck, from its angled strut front chrome grille design and 16-inch alloy wheels down to its large integrated overfenders.

The test unit was powered by a YD25DDTi 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC common rail direct injection turbo engine that generates 176 ps at 4,000 rpm and torque of 403 Nm at 2,brightstal000 rpm. All this brute power is controlled by a six-speed manual transmission that lets the driver change gears quickly and with ease.

I was surprised at the Navara’s TechXtreme acceleration. The Navara’s response and acceleration are quite good—it can do a zero to 100 kph in just under 10 seconds. Torque maxes out at a mere 2,ledlightbulbs000 rpm and takes the Navara pretty much anywhere you care to go. The vehicle is also equipped with limited slip differential to transfer power to the side with more traction.

On tight corners, the Navara TechXtreme surprisingly turns well, thanks to the independent double wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer bar at the front and the rigid axle leaf.

Attention to safety is a hallmark of Nissan, and the Navara TechXtreme is no exception. ABS and EBD are installed to provide quicker stops. With safety features like three-point seatbelts with ELR, dual SRS airbags and side impact beams, you can rest assured that everyone is well protected in case things go wrong.
