Cedar Grove plans to beef up security at Community Park by installing new lights and cameras to capture suspicious activity on the property.

The move comes in the wake of at least three reports of vandalism to the park in recent months.

"Anyone participating in illegal activity will be recorded and police will have leads to go on," said Township Manager Tom Tucci.The fluorescentlights2011 that we carry are designed to accomplish this.

Two cameras with bright fluorescent lights will be installed on utility poles in each the upper and lower playground areas, Tucci said.

The cameras will send images to a digital recorder. The video will be archived, and authorities will be able to remove a disc from the recorder and view the footage.

Tucci said another camera would be installed at the entrance to the park, recording anyone entering and exiting the park.

On Monday morning, police and fire officials responded to the park on a report of a piece of playground equipment on fire, according to police.A diving torch that floats over the water is revealed.

A recreation department worker extinguished the fire with a hand-held extinguisher. An initial investigation revealed the fire appears to have been deliberately set by some unknown person, police said. Tucci said the extent of security at the park has been just routine police patrols. With the new system, "This is going from minimal security to maximum security because (police) will have a full, detailed record of activity taking place with this security system and it will be overseen by police," he said.

He estimated the purchase and installation of the equipment to cost about $35,000 and hopes to go out to bid the project in the next two weeks.

When compared to the $13,000 in damages from the one incident of vandalism, the security cameras are a "good buy," Tucci said.
