"Last year I had this vision of creating a space of illuminated flame forms," she said. "I wanted to create an installation." She already had some experience with porcelain, which possesses a white clay body instead of gray. Hepner immediately loved the sensation of working with the material, she said. "I loved the creaminess of the porcelain body." In addition, she knew porcelain would work well with electrical firing — she has an electrical kiln in her home — and is more versatile to work with.

From there, her distinctive flame-like lamps were born. Hepner initially had the idea of trying a bulb form, but the porcelain was a bit too "unforgiving," she said. "If you bend it a bit too far as it dries, it will crack. If you try to manipulate it too much, it will crack."

Instead, she began letting the clay take shape organically on the wheel, throwing it very dry and removing all excess moisture by scraping it off with an implement called a rib. She trims each piece with a surform trimming tool before and after throwing it, twisting it just enough to make what she called "undulating or potbelly forms" without bending the clay too much.

But Hepner has succeeded in her overall vision of creating a collection of flame-like forms. Each piece is pearly and curling, warmly glowing once a fluorescent bulb is set inside.

She paints details in some with shellac and then wipes the entire piece with a damp sponge before the piece is fired. This way, she said, she builds layers to create different tiers of thickness and translucence. Other techniques Hepner has explored are to attach beach glass to the clay after a piece is fired. The glass becomes part of the clay fixture, creating an unexpected textural effect. Or she simply pierces another lamp with a clay knife, cutting away at the form until it becomes pockmarked and one can peek at the bulb inside. Still another clay form might be hand-built around a particular shape instead of being thrown on the wheel.

But many of the lamps have a consistent theme and hue. Most often, the artist will not even glaze the pieces. "I like a satin, simple surface," she said. "I like the purity of a white clay and the different things you can do with it." She also has experimented with barrel-firing and paper-firing to create different swirling colors on other sculptures based on nostalgic childhood toys, which she has previously exhibited and which also appear with the lamps at her Etsy website.

She still produces functional stoneware as well but finds herself consistently gravitating toward the creamy cone 5 and cone 6 clays, which she describes as "like a stoneware in porcelain skin."
