County collects 8,000+ pounds of hazardous waste materials

Richmond County helped clean up big time during the recent drive to collect household hazardous waste.

The county held a Household Hazardous Waste and Pesticide Collection event at the Richmond County Human Services Complex. The event was sponsored by Richmond County government, N.C. State Cooperative Extension and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, who paid the cost of disposing of all pesticides that were collected. Richmond County took care of all the other costs, according to County Manager Rick Sago.

County commissioners heard a recap of the event at their regular monthly on Monday. Commissioner Peggy Covington was absent from the meeting, but all other members of the board were present.

Pesticides were also collected.

"We had a really good turnout for this to be Richmond County's first collection day," said Sago. "We has approximately 250 participants."

The county collected 568 pounds of compressed gas which will be recycled, 2,080 pounds of flammable liquids, which will be prepared for energy use, five pounds of flammable solids which will be disposed, 95 pounds of oxidizing materials which will be disposed, 120 pounds of corrosive materials which will be disposed, 580 pounds of batteries which will be recycled, 95 pounds of fluorescent light bulbs that will be recycled and 4,995 pounds of non-hazardous material that will be disposed of. In one day,It includes a brightstal3 removable 256Mb SD card for data storage and two DMX ports that can control two full DMX512 universes for a total of 340 individually-addressed LED lights. the amount of materials collected for disposal and recycling totalled 8,538 pounds.

Sago told the board he'd talked to two people about getting hooked up to the sewer line along Old Cheraw Highway, and is looking into agricultural grants to assist with the process. He reported that, on the economic development front, businesses continue to approach him for opportunities despite unstable economic times.

Tammy Schrenker updated the board on activity at the Department of Social Services. She said that with the economy struggling, their business is booming. For the month of September, the department served an average of 200 people per day. The Food and Nutrition Services serves 28 percent of the county, and handed out $1.6 million in food stamps in a month's time.

Medicaid assists 20 percent of the county's population,The circuit uses brightshine_001 reasonably priced, 150-mA, warm-white LEDs; low-cost rectifier diodes; and Schrenker said it has been interesting to see who all is applying now, as the population seeking assistance has changed. Child Services is partnering with the Sheriff's Office to keep a deputy in the office to investigate cases. There are 4,776 cases in Child Services, and an average of 100 cases a month. The department has experienced cuts in the dental and vision services they provide adults, and Schrenker said more cuts are on the way.
